I've since chosen my appliances (I think ) and I've decided to go with a built in induction cooktop and 2 x 600mm under bench ovens so I need to rejig our underbench drawers. I have also made a few other changes and I'ld love your thoughts. This is the design from our cabinet maker: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ This is the first design I tried however I would really like big pot drawers beside the cooktop and oven for saucepans and casserole dishes and utensils. I don't think 600mm drawers is big enough for this. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ So this is the next option I tried. This one has 1100mm pot drawers beside the cooktop and oven but I'm wondering if this might be too wide? Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ The sink is centred under a large 2750mm servery window. And the cooktop is centred along the remaining wall with the ovens centred under the cooktop. I want the dishwasher on one side of the sink and the bin on the other so with all those things set in place it starts to limit the options for drawer sizes etc. A few questions: 1) Do you think 1100mm is too wide for pot drawers? 2) I've increased the the island bench from 3000mm to 3200mm long. I think it fits the space well and just gives a smidge more bench and drawer space. What do you think? 3) I've increased the island bench from 1000mm to 1100mm. I'm unsure about this one. Any thoughts? 4) What distance is ideal between the back bench and the island? We're thinking 1250mm to 1300? I guess we don't want it to be too wide because it then reduces the efficiency in the kitchen but we would also like it big enough so that a few people can be in the kitchen comfortably. 5) I've changed the cupboards under the sink to drawers. I would prefer as many drawers as possible. The top drawer will probably be a false drawer rather than having a cutout around the sink. Thoughts? 6) I could either have 3 banks of drawers under the island bench (1070mm each) or 4 banks of drawers (800mm). What size do you think would be better? These drawers will be for all our plates, bowls, glasses, cups, cutlery. 7) The current designs have overhead cupboards above the fridge. There are no other overheads at all in the kitchen. I'm think about making these open shelves, maybe wood. What do you think? The full pantry isn't in these pics. That's another post! Thanks for getting this far! viewtopic.php?f=31&t=76666 our custom build on 25 acres Re: Help with kitchen design! Please! 2Apr 07, 2015 4:36 pm Oh, and just the whole plan for perspective. The pantry is being extended over to the fridge so it will be 2500mm wide. Also, the island bench on this plan is drawn at 3600mm I think. It is a bit out of proportion I think so we are bringing it back to 3200mm. I think it fits the space well and just gives a smidge more bench and drawer space. What do you think? You can NEVER have too much bench space. As long as it fits in the space and you can move around the ends then the bigger the better 3) I've increased the island bench from 1000mm to 1100mm. I'm unsure about this one. Any thoughts? See above response! 4) What distance is ideal between the back bench and the island? We're thinking 1250mm to 1300? Again going from our plans the gap is 1200mm 5) I've changed the cupboards under the sink to drawers. I would prefer as many drawers as possible. The top drawer will probably be a false drawer rather than having a cutout around the sink. Thoughts? Personally I would keep some cupboards and the under the sink is where you usually put awkward shaped things, cleaning bottles etc. It's down to your personal taste really and what you'll use the space for 6) I could either have 3 banks of drawers under the island bench (1070mm each) or 4 banks of drawers (800mm). What size do you think would be better? These drawers will be for all our plates, bowls, glasses, cups, cutlery. I'd say three larger drawers. I always think that odd numbers look better (3's or 5's) but you may prefer symmetry! Also 800 feels a bit small for plates etc (thinking about dinner plates next to side plates etc?) 7) The current designs have overhead cupboards above the fridge. There are no other overheads at all in the kitchen. I'm think about making these open shelves, maybe wood. What do you think? Microwave recess? The full pantry isn't in these pics. That's another post! Thanks for getting this far! Re: Help with kitchen design! Please! 4Apr 07, 2015 5:40 pm Essentially agree with a lot of what Nikkis said. Here's my 2 cents worth.... A few questions: 1) Do you think 1100mm is too wide for pot drawers? Possibly?? I am thinking about the weight if you have some heavy pots. 2) I've increased the the island bench from 3000mm to 3200mm long. I think it fits the space well and just gives a smidge more bench and drawer space. What do you think? I agree with "You can NEVER have too much bench space". 3) I've increased the island bench from 1000mm to 1100mm. I'm unsure about this one. Any thoughts? Again I don't see a problem 4) What distance is ideal between the back bench and the island? We're thinking 1250mm to 1300? I guess we don't want it to be too wide because it then reduces the efficiency in the kitchen but we would also like it big enough so that a few people can be in the kitchen comfortably. Our gap is 1300, this is the same as a display home kitchen I liked and didn't think it too far 5) I've changed the cupboards under the sink to drawers. I would prefer as many drawers as possible. The top drawer will probably be a false drawer rather than having a cutout around the sink. Thoughts? I also think one or two doors are handy in this area for cleaning products, maybe chopping board, tea towel pull out etc 6) I could either have 3 banks of drawers under the island bench (1070mm each) or 4 banks of drawers (800mm). What size do you think would be better? These drawers will be for all our plates, bowls, glasses, cups, cutlery. I would choose 3 banks of drawers 7) The current designs have overhead cupboards above the fridge. There are no other overheads at all in the kitchen. I'm think about making these open shelves, maybe wood. What do you think? I like the idea of open wood shelves, it is something I nearly did. Also noticed no obvious spot for the microwave, have you thought of where to put it yet? My build thread: Custom build on 40 acres viewtopic.php?f=31&t=75656 Re: Help with kitchen design! Please! 5Apr 07, 2015 11:11 pm Thanks for your feedback Nikki & TnM. We rarely use a microwave so we will just have a small one in the pantry. I'm also happy with the 3 banks of drawers in the island bench. Just looking at the 500 mm bank of drawers beside the sink and wondering if they might be too narrow to be very practical. I could increase those to 600mm and maybe even increase the bin to 600 mm also to balance it up - that would then bring the big bank of drawers back to about 1000mm which could be good. TnM I was going to have some open wooden shelves each side if the range hood but the cabinet maker and builder talked me out of it - they thought it would look a bit messy so the wooden shelve above the fridge might be the compromise . viewtopic.php?f=31&t=76666 our custom build on 25 acres Help with kitchen design! Please! 6Apr 08, 2015 12:48 pm 900 wide drawers are a decent size. I had that length in my first build. As for the benchtop, not sure what material you are looking at but I'm not a fan of joins, Ceaserstone I know has a length limit close to your island length. I'd be more inclined to keep it to one piece, I've never seen a join wear well in any surface Re: Help with kitchen design! Please! 7Apr 09, 2015 8:50 am admodra Thanks for your feedback Nikki & TnM. I think your idea of 600 drawers & bin with the other bank at 1000 is a good idea, it would look more balanced too. Funny, I was also looking to have the wooden shelves on either side of the rangehood but was also talked out of it saying there would be too many features with the dark splashback and the windows either side. I also thought it would be a bugger to clean since it's so close to the cooker.
