Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Mar 19, 2015 12:33 pm Hi Has anyone perhaps made use of those vertical roller doors for their kitchen? We have a small area where I would like to build a server counter for our appliances (kettle, toaster, blender, coffee machine) but with a roller shutter type door to close it all off to keep the kitchen looking 'neat'. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ My idea is to build a normal counter with drawers underneath (600mm deep), then have an open space 1m high from the top of the counter with a couple of 150mm deep shelves in the back to place some cups, mugs, coffee, sugar, tea etc etc on. This 1m high and 1.8m wide area is where we would like to make use of the roller door. Then above this space to the ceiling some more 600mm deep cupboards for stuff we hardly ever use. (please see attached image) I went to one of the suppliers and was quoted roughly $800 for a 1.8m wide X 1m high roller door. I am not yet sure if this is either a good price or a bad price as I have nothing to compare it with. I was hoping some of you might have some more feedback as well as perhaps if there is an alternative to the roller door we might be able to use? You can also use pocket doors but they tend to take space out of your cupboard and are more complex to install. I use both depending on the situation and what the client wants. If you want it to match your existing cupboards the bi-fold option is best as you are just using standard doors. In your case you would have 4x450 wide doors that open to each side. The biggest issue with the bifold option is that you will have a door sticking out 450mm when your cupboard is open. This may be in the way as you will be walking through this area. The roller door is less intrusive space wise but definitely starts to change the look of your kitchen as it's another element, particularly being as big as you are wanting. If space in the walk through is big enough I'd opt for bi-fold doors as they work nicely and match in with the rest of the kitchen much better. I think they look like a garage door in your kitchen. I much prefer the look and function of a bifold door. Particularly when they get big. That being said, I have a roller door on my appliance hutch simply because bi-folds wouldn't have fitted the application. Spoke to SWAMBO and it seems I will have to save up a bit more and buy the roller door. The space between the counter and the island bench is only 1m. This will probably make it a bit awkward if we went for the bifold doors. And with all the items that need to go onto that counter, we HAVE to be able to close it off to make it neat. Ah well, we'll see how it all pans out. For now we are just putting down 2 cardboard boxes with an old plank on top so we can at least have some sort of counter space there. I fitted a bifold cabinet below a set of overheads last week that was 600mm high, close to half of your height! Not a problem in the world!! The roller door / Bifold doors would be 550mm deep. At 1.8m wall width that would leave me with 4 x 450mm doors. So it would be sticking out 400mm over the counter, leaving me only 600mm between the bifold doors and the island bench. You can actually have up to 8 doors if you wanted with the bifold solutions.
