All cabinets with downlights have a second bottom in them that is rebated to allow for the light and the wiring. Its usually pretty easy to retrofit if there is a power point close by. Otherwise you can get nice strip lighting lineal metal thing (can't recall proper name sorry) that attaches to base of your cabinets and the strip lighting fits into that. Both have there applications. As Beazley77 said you can get an aluminium or plastic chanel to house the LED strip lighting. If you run the wires around into the rangehood cabinet if you have one and plug into that power point and house your transformers if needed. FWIW, there are no lights between the island bench and the sink, so lighting is exclusively from the LEDs. In this case, to answer the OP, we had the cupboards constructed like a normal handleless cupboard, but with the recess deeper than normal to accommodate the LED lights (they are 8mm high as they are sealed (IP67) and have built-in heatsink along the strip).
