LED strips lights are more of a feature rather than actually providing usefull light. Both have there applications I beg to differ; with good quality LED strip lights, they will light up your bench very well. Is that bright enough? FWIW, there are no lights between the island bench and the sink, so lighting is exclusively from the LEDs. In this case, to answer the OP, we had the cupboards constructed like a normal handleless cupboard, but with the recess deeper than normal to accommodate the LED lights (they are 8mm high as they are sealed (IP67) and have built-in heatsink along the strip). Bigger the better for storage for me IMO. But I guess it's harder to tell the cost/benefit in your example - mainly the 'cost'?
