Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Jun 11, 2008 5:20 pm I have noticed that many people here are VERY good with colours. I am trying to choose colours for my new kitchen cabinets and benchtops and any suggestions would be very much appreciated before I order my new kitchen.
The kitchen is L shaped 2500 by 3200 by 2500. Outside area is under pergola therefore quite dark. I want neutral colours, that will not age: in beiges, I am trying to keep away from white for practical reasons. The only existing piece of furniture is a dining table made of recycled oregon stained dark brown, it has a reddish tinge to it. The floors would be laminate in oak finish perhaps (?). I was thinking glass doors in an aluminium frame for above bench cabinets, beige fronts for lower units. To match the existing table I was thinking wood veneer in similar colour to the table for the sides of the cabinets. Tiles would be white or ivory. I am thinking dark grey bench top although I like the idea of light coloured benches but I am worried it would get stained and would look awful. Kitchens Splash Back - white Bench Top - dark grey Cupboard Doors - beige (Dune) Cabinets - sides medium brown/mahogany Draws - beige Kickboard - aluminium Hardware / Taps - chrome Handles - stainless steel or aluminium Feature Lighting - stainless steel and glass spotlights Lighting - under cabinets fluoro strips Thanks Maggie Re: colours for a small kitchen 2Jun 12, 2008 11:22 am I am not an expert with colours but if your kitchen is small and dark by being shaded by a pergola, I would suggest you keep to light colours for most of it, as dark colours will make a room seem even smaller and darker.
If you want to feature any dark colours, I would keep them to a minimal area, possibly a dark benchtop with all light colours surrounding it, ie cupboards, splashback, walls, would work well. Re: colours for a small kitchen 3Jun 12, 2008 7:20 pm Maggie, I just put the Dune with C/Bond Woodland Grey, what a great combo that is!!!!!
I really like your colour choice! Very nice!! The closest Laminate I can get to that is Laminex “Gunmetal” or if you’re brave Wilsonart “Slate Grey” See how you go, but a really nice selections well done! I will take pics later so you can see what an eighties kitchen it is and hopefully when it is finished. Maggie Re: colours for a small kitchen 5Jun 12, 2008 7:52 pm Thanks Helyn, you are correct, I am worried it will look gloomy, I will have to look for some nice tiles and the walls will be exactly the same "white", not sure yet whether it will be warm or cool, I will take DUNE and make it as a base shade to the white. Bunnings can match the colour to the sample and I might add just a liitle bit to a can of paint, . the colour will be the same but much much lighter, nearly white. Hog Bristle might be the right colour in Dulux. I love colours, sometimes I just buy a can of paint because I like the colour and later I do not know what to do with it
Maggie Re: colours for a small kitchen 6Jun 12, 2008 7:54 pm For a small kitchen I think the timber might be an over kill.
It might make the space too dark. Sorry I got caught up with the colours and forgot about the timber. Sounds like my DH with his pieces of electronic equipment Re: colours for a small kitchen 8Jun 13, 2008 5:43 am Thanks Michelle, I was a bit worried about the timber, I think I will just stick to Dune. Now is the time toget the quotes and order, not that I will not be agonising about the colour choices , though your advice helped a lot.
Ah, Helyn my DH is the same with cameras and he has to get the newest and best. Last week we went to have our eyes tested to the city and we treated the whole trip as a touristy outing. He took his newest toy with him and young guys on the train were asking him about his camera, toy freeks as well At least paint is cheaper. Even my kitchen might be cheaper!!!! but each to their own, he prefers to spend his money on toys so be it, it keeps him happy .
