Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Jun 09, 2008 9:41 pm Hi all,
prior to choosing the colour I had better work out which benchtop I should have. I have approx 6 metres of bench top...I dont wish to land hot pans on my B/T or chop on it...but I plan on staying in my new home for the rest of my life so durability is fairly important....as is ease of cleaning. I dont want to economise in the kitchen as it is the central room in a new house...but I dont want to go OTT could you please let me know approx cost per metre for the following.. laminate, QQ, essa stone, CS, corian, granite and please suggest any I havent thought of! but not wood or SS thanks, Jo Re: my answer is probably here somewhere? benchtop advice please 2Jun 10, 2008 12:07 am The only one I can help you with atm is Laminate at about $149 per linial meter supplied and installed Best Price Wardrobes Sliding door robes | Walk in robes Deco panel | Mirror | Melamine 26 to 28 Cottage lane Hackham M: 0402 927 376 http://www.bestpricewardrobes.com.au Trade welcome Re: my answer is probably here somewhere? benchtop advice please 3Jun 10, 2008 7:24 am You will be very pleased with Granite but make sure it is true Granite you will find out this by the difference in cost but true Granite sealed is the best surface for bench tops by far as we seal and restore these everyday thats also why the rich choose to go this way and if it ever gets damaged you can re hone and polish back to brand new.
Craig Re: my answer is probably here somewhere? benchtop advice please 4Jun 10, 2008 6:12 pm Just gone through the same exercise. Agree that granite is the best choice.
I was told that 30mm granite costs around $900 per metre Out kitchen uses about 7.5 metres (with one 3 metre piece 900mm wide) plus about 2.5 metres for bathroom vanities. The installed cost for 30mm premium grade granite was $8,400 (that's all the tops including the bathrooms). Hope it helps. Re: my answer is probably here somewhere? benchtop advice please 5Jun 10, 2008 10:36 pm thanks for that AM
I do wish to use the same benchtop on vanities and laundry. sounds like granite is too expensive for me and laminate too cheap what would be the next cheapest from granite...engineered stone? if so which one qq,cs, essa stone also has anyone bought "corian" and what is corian? Is it an engineered stone? I have yet to decide the depth...is 20mm pretty well standard? Jo Re: my answer is probably here somewhere? benchtop advice please 6Jun 11, 2008 6:27 pm We used premium granite but a mid-grade would be quite a bit cheaper (about $4-$5k) and there's a lot more choice.
And you can also save by using 20mm granite. It's fine in bathrooms but some people say it's too thin for kitchens. The granite people we went through (who did a superb job) said 20mm was fine for kitchens as long as you don't have big overhanging areas or very narrow lips around sinks etc. We didn't find engineered stone any cheaper than granite, or only marginally. I think Corian is even more expensive than stone. Why not go and look at some natural stones and get a quote? You lose nothing and you might be surprised. Re: my answer is probably here somewhere? benchtop advice please 7Jun 11, 2008 9:56 pm brilliant!
thanks again AM looks like the mid grade granite 20mm might suit us perfectly...that sounds cheaper than I expected. we have no narrow spaces or overhangs now I just have to find some suppliers, and work out vanities and laundry etc Jo Re: my answer is probably here somewhere? benchtop advice please 8Jun 12, 2008 6:21 am The easiest way to test its quality is do a scratch test if it scratches easily than do not buy it but if it is hard to scratch than buy it.
Craig Hi Courtney The mitred edges are glued up with epoxy so those little holes and gaps are areas that weren't filled correctly. Silicone is the wrong product to fill them… 2 12921 Versaloc is a mortarless besser block system that still needs a properly engineered footing. If you just do a 400x200 footing it will fail in time.
