Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Oct 22, 2014 10:14 pm Hi guys, We're almost at the stage where the walls in our renovated house will go on. I've got one question with regard to my wall hung kitchen cabinets (mind you, we'll be doing the kitchen install ourself). If we can't get the cabinets fixed to studs, would it be an idea to put 12mm mdf behind the plasterboard to be able to take the weight of the cabinets? I understand that I could put studs /battens in at exactly the height where the cabinets will be hung, but I'm not 100% sure where that would be so sheets of mdf would be much easier (apart from having to cut out holes where all the power points etc will be). Or would screwing kitchen cabinets into 12mm mdf be asking for trouble? Re: Wall hung cabinets - mdf behind plasterboard? 3Oct 23, 2014 4:58 pm Are you having small single overheads?? This is possibly the only time you would need ply behind the gyprock. Normally you would find stubs in one cabinet or the other and be able to get enough fixings to hold them up. If we don't have any studs at the end of an overhead run we use 3-4 wallmates. You would be surprised just how strong them are! My main issue would be that now (as long as there's no plasterboard) it's easy to install additional timber framing in, if we need to. I'm pretty sure we would hit one or 2 studs, but not sure whether that would be enough. To answer the question: it will be a row of 2400mm cupboards, in (I believe) a 40/40/40/60/60 configuration. If its a row of 2400mm long overheads then you are overthinking it! You wont have any problems at all fixing the cabinets back to the wall. There are more than enough studs in a 2400mm long run to hold them up!!! As cutting edge said you should have more than enough studs to screw into on a row that long. But if there is no plaster then if you do want extra fixings for what ever reason put in some more studs or noggins rather that MDF or ply. Probably a not bad thing to mention particle board should in case anyone else reading this got the two confused. 6 3522 Thank you alexp79 and gommeqld for your advice, that's very helpful, thanks 3 6290 What we have done in a few theatres ( including my own) is run 2 layers of 13mm gyprock, but sounds insulation especially for the bass is really tricky as a lot of that… 4 1677 |
