Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Oct 07, 2014 1:33 pm My house has a standard island bench that is 850mm wide - 250mm overhang. I requested they widen it to 1000mm. Here is snips from the kitchen elevation: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ (Note - no waterfall ends, and the benchtop is 20mm essastone.) I understand they need to provide extra support to the stone. However, I was not expecting to have a void at the back of the cupboards (which seems to be what is drawn) but rather to have a deeper overhang space. Is it possible to do this? Or would I need to add support (extra cabinets facing opposite to the main ones for instance?) Would it be possible to change it post handover? (flooring is being done after handover, so no concerns there) My current thought is to put a narrow cabinet (200mm?) at each end, use those to support a 16-20mm thick panel, that is maybe 50mm narrower than the stone overhang, which in turn supports the stone. Doable? Would I need to replace the backpanel for the island or would it be reusable? DIY job? (good handyman skills... have put-together flatpack kitchens in the past!) Am I strange for wanting to have plenty of knee-space to sit comfortably at the bench? Land settled May '14. You could instead request that the drawers are made longer? You could instead request that the drawers are made longer? Its actually CaesarStone that wont warrant any overhangs over 300mm. You builder is just passing this along. For overhangs over 300mm the OP will need additional support. There are a number of ways of doing this. Just cut it to length.
