Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Jul 20, 2014 8:50 pm Hi All, My dreams of having a black butt wave island and appliance tower in my kitchen have been dashed with a very expensive upgrade cost of $7k!!!! Looks as though our entire kitchen will now be in silk white. To help avoid another heart attack when I get my next variation, just wondering if anyone knows whether the silk white automatically comes with the matching edging or am I looking at another upgrade and Is this likely to be pricey? Thanks Tussy! Re: laminex silk white abs edge banding 2Jul 20, 2014 8:58 pm I would imagine the edging always matches the panels As far as I'm aware it's never an option/upgrade. Otherwise you can see a slight black line if that makes sense? I am so over everything being an additional cost as I am sure many people can relate that I am too scared to ask the builder!!! Re: laminex silk white abs edge banding 4Jul 21, 2014 2:14 pm The edging always matches the panel. You'd have to ask specifically for it not to. There is always a very thin line at the junction of the edging and the face of the panel as it is applied with a hot melt glue and you always see a very thin line of it. It doesn't look bad. Its my understanding from the laminex shop that the vinyl wrap avoids that (for an extra cost of course), and from memory, the painted finish. Let me know if you get different information as I am keen on the white but not the ABS edging line... Re: laminex silk white abs edge banding 6Aug 26, 2014 3:20 pm The edging colour matches the door. As chippy said you would have to ask for it not to match! You will almost always see fine black line. This is the glue line. Yes sure with vinyl you don't have to edge it and you don't have a fine black line but the faces will bubble and fall off! Seriously google vinyl wrap, there is always problems with it. I strongly recommend against it. Its a rubbish product that has no business being in kitchens!! Vinyl is applied under heat and pressure, if you apply even a mild heat to it the glue reacts and lets go. When I say mild heat all of the following will cause these problems, Oven, toaster, kettle, steam oven, coffee machine, plate warmer. Vinyl has a very bad reputation. But if you can live with melamine, polytec has createc with what they call 'Lazer edge'. It is the createc high gloss board edged with hi-gloss abs edging, but they use a white glue so it doesnt stand out (the thin line) the edge almost blends into the board. These doors can be ordered from your cabinetmaker but polytec need to cut & edge them with their white glue. These doors can be seen on the createc display board at a lot of kitchen manufacturers. Disclaimer: they cost more than standard melamine Re: laminex silk white abs edge banding 9Aug 26, 2014 10:14 pm Sonny2014 It is the createc high gloss board edged with hi-gloss abs edging, but they use a white glue so it doesnt stand out (the thin line) the edge almost blends into the board. ( Sure they're not just using one of the newer edgebander designs- a laser edger? (that uses a laser, or hot air, to melt the edges on, without glue? ) These new edgers are also polishing the cut edges of the edge, which means the side of the edge is also gloss. Quality is like buying oats. If you want good, fresh oats, you'll pay a fair price. However,if you can be satisfied with the oats that have already been through the horse, that comes a little cheaper. Re: laminex silk white abs edge banding 10Aug 26, 2014 10:27 pm GBDesign. Not sure (about method), but the samples Ive seen look pretty good. Not invisible but no thin black line. Ive been told they use white glue. Only problem is only Polytec can provide the doors to specs. Therefore the cabbie needs to order them as bought in doors, so the cost will rise i guess.
