Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 May 31, 2014 7:46 am I need someone to dumb it down for me. So it is like a surround that goes around ANY microwave that you buy or does the trim kit fit only a certain type of microwave? I mean, what happens when your microwave breaks in 5 years and you go to buy a new one and it doesn't fit? I am wanting to build in my oven and hopefully my microwave into a wall cavity (from under some stairs), and our kitchen dude is giving the built in microwave a bit of a thumbs down. He suggests putting it in the pantry? I really only use the microwave for defrosting, steaming vegies and rice. So I have right now the cheapest, smallest microwave that I could find. Cheers, Sandra Re: Can someone explain how built in microwaves work? 2May 31, 2014 8:12 am They seem to be quite specifically sized and I believe the trim kit IS brand specific. I think they look very nice but they're blardy expensive! I use my microwave all the time so need it in the main kitchen. I previously thought "trim kit" must mean that it could be trimmed to size to fit around the microwave into the cabinetry but no, apparently not! Build thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=65085 Re: Can someone explain how built in microwaves work? 3May 31, 2014 8:42 am You have to buy the trim kit to match the microwave. I believe though that the outside measurements of trim kits come in a few standard sizes to make future changeover easier, meaning its the inside diameter that changes size. We have (will have when it's finished!) a built in microwave and trim kit. I never really thought about what would happen when/if it breaks in a few years. I guess I'll cross that bridge when I come to it Custom downslope build Build thread viewtopic.php?f=31&t=61873 Blog http://www.buildingroyalmanor.blogspot.com.au Re: Can someone explain how built in microwaves work? 4May 31, 2014 9:10 am Just get the Kitchen guy to make a surround using the same materials as your doors on the kitchen, this will work out cheaper and easier to modify if you have to change microwaves. Re: Can someone explain how built in microwaves work? 5May 31, 2014 7:40 pm Splashers Just get the Kitchen guy to make a surround using the same materials as your doors on the kitchen, this will work out cheaper and easier to modify if you have to change microwaves. I personally wouldn't do this especially if you are fitting a microwave above a wall oven. All microwave trim kits are brand/model specific and are made in the same material as the microwave. When installed above an oven it give a seamless look. The oven and microwave become the same width and work perfectly in a 600mm cabinet. I strongly suggest buying a trim kit to suit your microwave. Splashers if you build a surround out of any of the melamine or Crystalgloss doors then your up for a full sheet when and if you need to change microwaves. That's assuming the colour is still available! A full sheet can cost anywhere from $180 - $350 plus cutting, edging and fitting. It would probably be cheaper to buy a new trim kit!! Microwaves can be tricky. ugh. Sandra Sandra Re: Can someone explain how built in microwaves work? 7Jun 01, 2014 8:03 pm Some built in microwaves don't need trim kits as they're installed like a built in oven and many European non-trim kit built-in microwaves have similar sizes (usually 450-460mm or 380-390mm high x 600mm wide) so replacement shouldn't be a problem. 450/460mm high built in microwaves: http://www.bosch-home.com.au/appliances/cooking/microwave-compact-ovens/HMT35M653A.html?source=browse http://www.miele.co.uk/microwaves/M6262-TC-295/#tab-specs 380/390mm high built-in microwaves: http://www.gaggenau.com/au/product/BMP224/BMP225?sourceCat=baking_and_coffee#downloads http://www.vzug.com/au/en/product/au-Catalog/945367?category=microwave Another way is to hide the mcirowave behind some sort of bi fold door or drop down door above the oven. I got a Smeg microwave drop down door above my smeg oven and I just put a cheap and nasty Sharp microwave behind it and I replaced it once already and the second one seems to be playing up again. I have to admit I usually keep the door open 24/7 unless I have some VIPs coming over. We have two separate items. And built the oven column to house them separately. We have had experience when a MW ceased to work - we couldn't buy the same type again. It was quite annoying and costly to set up a new MW. It didn't quite fit the trim. So - I'd go for a separate wall oven and MW. But - that's just me. They look just as good if done properly. Re: Can someone explain how built in microwaves work? 10Jun 04, 2014 9:23 am Jaeger LeCoultre, thank you so much! I didn't know that there were 600 wide microwaves. Ahh, the things you learn every day. They do look like what I would be after. Perhaps the price range is out of our budget for the Gaggeneu and V-Zug kicking off at 2K, but I have some seen some others that are cheaper. Now that I know what I am looking for I will be able to research it properly. Otherwise if completely out of budget I can do the drop down door like you have and have my cheap and nasty Sharp in there too Thank you everyone for your help. We have an appointment with a builder tomorrow to get an approximate price of our house build... if it looks promising we MAY be able to go the V-Zug!!! ha ha ha Re: Can someone explain how built in microwaves work? 11Jun 05, 2014 4:48 am sandra77 Jaeger LeCoultre, thank you so much! You can also look at the Neff microwave which is same as the Gaggenau at half the price but I think Gaggenau one has a grill inside (both Neff and Gaggenau are owned by Bosch-Siemens) and they're both side opening door not drop down door. http://www.appliancewarehouse.com.au/p-5822-21l-neff-microwave-oven-c54l60n3gb.aspx Another good one is the Bosch, theirs is bigger (and taller) than Gaggenau and Neff and with a drop down door and it's cheaper: http://www.binglee.com.au/bosch-hmt35m653a-built-in-microwave-oven-171 Even Ikea has a few from $249 for one with trim kit or $399 for a non trim kit built in microwave. And at that price you can buy a spare one as a replacement back-up if you worry about the size. Their website doesn't seem to show any microwaves at the moment but they were there a few days ago, it must've been being updated but normally it should be here: http://www.ikea.com/au/en/catalog/categories/departments/kitchen/appliances/ Re: Can someone explain how built in microwaves work? 12Jun 05, 2014 7:41 am Cutting Edge Kitchens and Cabinet Making http://cuttingedgekitchens.net.au http://www.facebook.com/pages/Cutting-Edge-Kitchens/290484196676 Mobile : 0419 430 575 PH: 9452 4772 Fax :9452 4772 cuttingedgekitchens@outlook.com Thanks.
