Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 May 24, 2014 11:43 pm Hi, I want to redo our kitchen but I have a bit of a problem. We have a U shaped Kitchen, but only one of the sides of the U is against a complete wall in the house. I have the oven and fridge next to each other on this wall and I am considering moving the fridge away so that they form a better triangle with the sink, and also so I have room for a wall mounted oven. To do this I'd have to put the fridge on the other side, which is joins the dining area and isn't separated by a wall, just the kitchen benches. This is a layout of what I am trying to do: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Here is a 3D from the point of the laundry door. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Now obviously I wouldn't just leave it freestanding like that, but what I want to work out is: a)Is this something that can be done, or a fridge should always be against the wall? b)If it can be done, what's the best way to hide it? A floor to ceiling cabinet? I really dont want to have to move plumbing or do anything too expensive, so I think it's worth doing if It doesn't cause more problems than I'm just not considering. Thanks for any advice! Alex Re: New Kitchen Layout - Fridge not against wall 2May 25, 2014 12:20 am You could do it, I'm not sure it will look that great as it is going to make the kitchen look much smaller and closed in I think I would probably either drop the wall oven idea or you will have to re-think the kitchen design. What about the laundry wall for the fridge? Maybe consider moving the stove top to the bench facing the dining room and design in full wall cabinets with wall oven, fridge, pull out pantry, appliance cupboard in the corner etc. I guess everything depends on your budget. Re: New Kitchen Layout - Fridge not against wall 3May 25, 2014 6:10 am I wouldn't do it. You'd have to build a floor to ceiling cabinetry area to house the fridge (otherwise it would look very pov in my opinion) and it would really close the area off. My friend actually has a kitchen exactly like that and she HATES the giant fridge obstructing everything. If it is the "A" could fridge slide into corner ? Re: New Kitchen Layout - Fridge not against wall 5May 25, 2014 9:58 am Could you possibly move the fridge into the laundry? I have seen this set-up many times on British TV shows, where the fridge is in the adjacent "utility room". You could also consider having the wall oven mounted under the kitchen bench. Re: New Kitchen Layout - Fridge not against wall 6May 25, 2014 10:04 am We had a fridge and wall oven either side of the door to the dining room - no problems at all. Re: New Kitchen Layout - Fridge not against wall 7May 25, 2014 10:07 am Saint mike as far as I understand A and B are not walls, the whole area is open plan besides the top wall (behind the stove). Oops - oh .... Well - I withdraw everything I said ... Interesting concept. Fridge in laundry might be go then - as mentioned above. I had a similar issue with my fridge not too long ago. It wasn't the same model, but the symptoms were pretty much the same: the compressor would start and then stop… 3 7514 DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair I'm in WA and our sandy soils make drainage a bit easier but this is what I'd be doing.
