Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 May 23, 2014 11:52 am So we moved into our new house in January of this year and we are now looking at adding more cabinetry to our kitchen. This is current kitchen: The wall with the fridge is where we are looking at adding cupboards, to start with I was thinking a full wall of cupboards around the fridge. The wall is 2.4m wide and the fridge takes up 1m of that space. Then we thought about possibly having some extra bench space for storing appliances that are used for much they can't go away in the pantry (thermomix, coffee machine and kettle for example). This is my current thought: The 1.4m on the left of the fridge would be split in two, with one side being full cupboards going from floor to ceiling (our ceiling is 31c high and as that may be quite high for cupboards maybe just a panel to close in the space so it isn't open to collect dust and grease?), the other half will be a base cabinet for some extra bench space. Underneath that I am thinking a drawer for the bins (next to the fridge is where our bins are at the moment so we would need somewhere for them in the new design). Then overheads cupboards going the full width of the space from over the base cabinet and over the fridge. The full length cupboards I wouldn't mind if at the bottom there was two pot drawers (up to the height of the benchtop top) then cupboards above. Anyone's thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Also if anyone would know roughly how much we could be looking at to get a cabinet maker to do this. We would need to get matching materials so the cupboards would be laminex stipple seal and the benchtop would be essatone frappe 20mm. Thanks for any advice anyone has Re: Adding cupboards to kitchen - thoughts? 2May 23, 2014 12:32 pm I will never understand why builders include so little cabinetry in kitchens (well, I understand from a "saving themselves money" perspective - but that doesn't make it right!). I think your idea of cabinets next to the fridge space is a good idea but maybe the cabinet that runs over the top of the fridge space may be a little too high? I also think the area above your existing bench (either side of the rangehood) is crying out for some overhead cupboards. I have a similar arrangement in my kitchen (recessed bench that butts up against a wall) and I added one set of cupboards either side of the rangehood for my glasses/coffee cups etc and they work fine. Given that your house has only recently been built you should (hopefully) be able to easily match materials). As to cost, I'm afraid I can't be much assistance as I had mine put in by the builder so, of course, they were more expensive than just getting a cabinetmaker in. Re: Adding cupboards to kitchen - thoughts? 3May 23, 2014 1:59 pm Overheads next to the rangehood are next on the list after the fridge wall. We don't have a lot to put in them all now but I can imagine given a few years they will all be needed! My sister has even less kitchen storage than me, she will have problems in the future as there is nowhere in hers to add more. I have asked for a quote from the cabinet maker that our builder used, but directly so no builder mark up, hopefully it comes back reasonable! Re: Adding cupboards to kitchen - thoughts? 4May 24, 2014 7:37 am I would go for a wall of cabinets and a cabinet over the fridge. You can have a fixed shelf in one of the cabinets at bench height for your appliances. I believe the bench top in your design is too small to look convincing. Also would like linen cupboard in laundry. Just something simple but they charge like anything for the most simple designs. Re: Adding cupboards to kitchen - thoughts? 8May 24, 2014 1:49 pm CuttingEdgeKitchens I believe the bench top in your design is too small to look convincing. I agree with this. We had a pokey bench between cupboards in our old house and it was totally useless. It was awkward to stand there to do anything due to cupboard either side so it basically became storage for the kettle. I think making it all floor to ceiling cupboard would be more useful, perhaps with one of those little roll up door/appliance hideaways at bench height. Build thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=65085 Re: Adding cupboards to kitchen - thoughts? 9May 24, 2014 7:32 pm We were thinking of the roll up door for appliances and having it enclosure rather than bothering with bench space. Just thought I would see what people thought. We actually find we have enough bench space as it is, it is more for storing appliances that don't go away. Re: Adding cupboards to kitchen - thoughts? 10May 25, 2014 2:01 am I agree with the above comments. Either a roller door or bifold doors to close off a full width appliance section would give you the cleanest look. It would also be cheaper as you don't need to have the essa bench. I'd also have power put in to this section so the appliances can be used without taking them out. It's relatively easy to put the power in behind the cabinets and the wall chase (something we here in the west have to think about) will be hidden by the cabinets so you don't need to patch the wall. It's much better to get it done all at the same time. I'd even consider putting some task lighting in the appliance section so it can be lit when in use. If I was designing your kitchen from the beginning I would have put your bin closer to your sink, but as you have your bin sitting next to your fridge as it is now, then I'd definitely be looking at installing one in the base units of the new cabinets. Kitchens look a lot cleaner without a bin sitting around somewhere. I think overall your design is a good practical use of that space. This would give a fair bit of storage. As for price? The house I'm building now we got the kitchen people to also do our laundry. To do 1950 of hanging wall cabinets in the same colour as our kitchen( not cretec just matt finish) for 1200. Plus 180 for the bulkhead and our builder is charging 100 just to finish that bulkhead off. That is where we need the cupboards. Can you say what this cost ? We already have the ones above the hot plate area. And, because we build a wall oven column (which also houses the MW) we have more where that door is - 2 large drawers under and good cupboard space above. You may have said - but is that a Plantation house ? Re: Adding cupboards to kitchen - thoughts? 14May 30, 2014 10:35 am Hi no it's my own layout built by new generation part of summit. But the bottom one - so we have a large space above. Shelf about 15cms above fridge line. Should be cheaper. So your talking about an open shelf, no doors?? If so then it will be more expensive. People always think open shelves will be cheaper, the fact is the entire cabinet needs to be built out of the door material. Doors allow you to use the much cheaper white melamine behind. A-ha - thanks for that. Re: Adding cupboards to kitchen - thoughts? 19Jun 03, 2014 5:10 pm We added overheads with glass in our last build for display. Strangely it worked out cheaper than open shelving. Re: Adding cupboards to kitchen - thoughts? 20Jun 17, 2014 11:04 pm The form you chose looks really good. There will be enough space for all your utensils, dishes and all the other kitchen junk. The shape is also very nice. It won't be in the way of anything, but it will be quite easily cleaned or organised. Also the fact that all the cupboards will be near the stove is a very good idea, because this way you won't have to go around the entire kitchen if you need something.
