Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 May 20, 2014 1:11 pm Hi i have haunted (and enjoyed) this forum since January while I've been planning my kitchen and now I'm stuck, I think it's time to say hi and ask all you helpful people for some advice. We are renovating our kitchen in a old asbestos house. The new kitchen is sitting at the cabinetmakers ready to go in but we are struggling to get the old kitchen out. I've never felt so much stress and I've shed a few tears over this kitchen. We started to pull out the cabinets to find asbestos behind the cupboards, we thought that's ok we can handle this but then when smashing a tile off hubby has hit through to the asbestos and I've decided we are doing no more. So I found someone that can come tomorrow and pull out the rest of the kitchen, all the tiles and the asbestos but hubby says no because he needs to be available to put the new walls up because it will be leaving the exterior wall asbestos exposed to us inside, which is confusing me because don't the plumber and electrician need the walls off up do their work? Can we just put up plastic and the plumber and electrician can take it down to their work and then we finish if by putting the new sheeting up? Will the plumber and electrician work like that or is there still a asbestos risk to them? Will it be safe for us to be living in the home while all this happens and just having plastic up? Sorry for all the questions but I've got kids at home at kitchen half pulled out and a cat that wants to play in the demolished mess. I'm at breaking point trying to find the answers. Thankyou. Re: Kitchen asbestos and trades 2May 20, 2014 2:00 pm Hi Mellymoo,
I have no answers to any of your questions but maybe an Asbestos Helpline could tell you what you need to know. This is a link to a not for profit organisation that has a 24 hour helpline you can ring: http://www.asbestosinfo.com.au/asbestos_home.html Can you lock the cat in the laundry? Which state are you in? In Victoria you can try ringing the EPA on 96952722. Maybe they could answer your questions. Re: Kitchen asbestos and trades 3May 20, 2014 2:02 pm Hi Mellymoo, It's rather important that you take the risks of what Asbestos and what it can do to seriously. There are laws around what you can and can't do with asbestos removal, most of them relate to what you can't do and they are there to protect you and your families health. Personally, I would be getting an expert in to make an assessment and remove the lining before you have asbestos dust floating throughout your house. I am not meaning to be an alarmist, but the long term affects of what this stuff can do to you, are well out weighed by short cutting to save a few bucks. Just my opinion. It is a professional that I have organised to get in and remove the asbestos but I can't get hold of him at the moment to let me know if putting plastic up is the right thing or do I need to put the new walls up straight away and I'm wondering how the plumber and electrician work around it.
I'm trying to plan out all the steps in my head but I can't get hold of the guys to ask the process. I thought someone may have been through it. Thanks Re: Kitchen asbestos and trades 6May 20, 2014 2:30 pm sorry I did misread your post. The order that things would normally run - asbestos removal and seal the inside of the exterior wall - plumber and electrician rough in - new internal walls - kitchen installation - plumber and electrician connect hope this helps. Hubby was saying walls need to go straight up but that didn't make sense to me if the plumber and electrician need to work behind them. I was so excited when the asbestos guy came to give me a quote within 5 minutes of my call that I didn't think to ask him how it all works. Re: Kitchen asbestos and trades 8May 21, 2014 3:32 am One thing which should be mentioned is to get multiple quotes if you can. The prices can vary alot! I had a couple of internal fibro walls removed from my house and was quoted $600 through to $3000 without them even coming to look at it. Anyway I'm not sure where you are but if your in Sydney give this guy (Pat) a call (http://www.1stchoiceasbestos.com.au), very friendly and honest bloke. Always get multiple quotes, no matter how reasonable/cheap you think it is. I remember getting a few quotes for a pool fence, roughly around the same price, thinking the… 5 9656 "Losers" "humanity" "off time" "your" "top notch" "love symbol" Sounds like ponzo is done using other people's toilets 36 23830 What you are looking at is fibrous plaster, true gypsum, it is cast on horizontal beds with fibers included to give strength.
