Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 May 15, 2014 9:58 am Hi All, Can you provide some advice about our kitchen layout? Kitchen Option A: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Kitchen Option B: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ I have attached to options for kitchen layout. They are the same shape but it is the outlook from the kitchen area which will differ. Please forgive the scribbles on the images - they are irrelevant for this query. In option A, the wall to the left is a high wall with pantry at bottom, bench and then the fridge area at the top. Option B has this switched to the opposite side, and has breakfast bar area at the top left instead. The high wall stops before the breakfast bar and thus opens the kitchen up to the living area because the left hand wall does not continue so far up. The benefits of option A is that we can have a display bulkhead in the entry as a feature - because the wall is 600-800mm longer. But I guess the benefits of option B are the more open feel to the rest of the living area (though you may see the breakfast bar from the entrance area). Could you guys provide some feedback as to what option you think is better and why? Thanks as always! Re: Kitchen Layout Query 2May 15, 2014 10:48 am Hmm, I guess it depends what matters more to you - the grandeur of a dramatic entry, or a nice open planned kitchen and living area. Personally, I'd prefer the more open plan kitchen/living and so would opt for plan B. This is partly because I'm building with young kids in mind and would find it easier to watch them, but this might not apply to you. I think with both designs you can see straight into the house from the entry so that risk of seeing mess is there for both options. You'll just have to keep it clean Our build thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=69984 If you want the rainbow, you gotta put up with the rain. Re: Kitchen Layout Query 3May 16, 2014 8:54 am The fault i have with Plan B is that people walking into the entrance will generally use the kitchen bench corner area as a dumping ground for their stuff. Plan A gives the entrance a nicer flow and keeps the breakfast bar for what its intended to use for. Re: Kitchen Layout Query 4May 16, 2014 9:53 am Option A. As said, the dumping ground issue. Also, with A, it suits a rh hinge fridge better, and they are much more common. Land settled May '14. Having just spent many hours going through fridge options, online and in person - no. No, they can't. A small handful have both rh and lh options (with lh almost always a special order) and an even smaller number are reversible doors. The rest are rh only. If only one hinge direction is offered, it is always a rh hinge. Side by side fridges have fridge on right hand side, freezer on left. Right hand hinges on fridges are ubiquitous. The only reason I ask is this would move the kitchen closer to the dining area and alfresco. They are very similar sized rooms and this way you will find it easier to entertain in the alfresco without having to walk through the house. Just a thought. By the way I prefer option A as it almost seems like you are walking through the kitchen instead of an entry way in option B. Well what do you know... The salesman we were talking to just must have been glossing over that whole issue then... Or talking out of his bum! Build thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=65085 Re: Kitchen Layout Query 10May 23, 2014 12:01 pm LOL - sales guys are trying to make a sale. Sure, there are LH options, but they aren't the majority or necessarily easy to get. I have a LH hinged fridge; I remember sitting with sales guys at three different stores (good guys, HN & e&s) checking what the order time was for the LH option. For all of the models in my desired size and (generous) price range. RH hinge - no problem, any model, delivery that week. LH, excluding floor models, -every single one- was special order, lead time 2+ weeks to 6months-aka-we-have-no-idea. It probably varies at time of year as warehouse stock is refreshed and so on, but yeah. It is something I will not forget. That said, it was a minor point about the original question, just one I happened to notice. It bothers some people (me included) and having to get anything out of the ordinary can be a nuisance. If you a) wouldn't be bothered or b) don't believe it to be a hassle, dismiss the point as irrelevant to you. Land settled May '14.
