Browse Forums Kitchen Corner Re: OVEN under STOVE- What do you think? 2May 22, 2008 11:40 pm No problemo...a standard method of installation provided you have all the dimensional clearances sorted out we had this arrangement at the old house. And that was an older style separate griller under bench oven so it was right under the bench.
Some have concerns with underbench ovens and kids which is fair enough, and the general concerns about crouching down versus tip toeing into a wall mounted oven if you are vertically challenged like my DW. If they are both electric I think you have to run two separate 15 amp lines - one to the electric cooktop and one to the oven - with separate fuses (....?). If the cooktop is gas the electrics are only needed for the piezo start....and therefore a standard outlet for the cooktop and a 15 amp direct connection for the oven. If the cooktop is gas I thing the regulator for the cooktop will have to be in an adjacent cupboard as it may not fit behind the oven.....although may not be a problem with modern integrated grillers and therefore slimmer oven designs. There are several cabinet makers/kitchen designers on the forum that can clarify. mmm....donuts Homer Simpson 1956- Links: Site Costs Ready Reckoner | H1 Addiction Medical Advice | Château TDL: The Backyard Re: OVEN under STOVE- What do you think? 3May 22, 2008 11:51 pm Hi Mike,
Thanks for the really quick reply. Are you an electrical engineer? Very knowlegeable reply. I wonder if having an under the stove oven in still proplular.? or do most people opt for a wall oven? Raz If you think you can, you can. Re: OVEN under STOVE- What do you think? 4May 23, 2008 12:45 am We were originally having cooktop plus wall oven. When the kitchen was re-designed, it had the oven under the cooktop. We decided to change it to an all-in-one range. It's the equivalent of your set-up, just all in one piece. According to people I've talked to, the wall oven thing is just about over. It will date pretty quickly now.
Judie Re: OVEN under STOVE- What do you think? 5May 23, 2008 3:36 am We have the oven under the stove in our current house, kitchen renovation done in 2000. There was an all in one unit there before, in the same place there are now separate units, an underbench oven with the cook top directly over it. Cook top is gas, oven is electric, there is no problem at all with using both at same time.
The same oven could also be mounted as a wall oven. I don't mind wall ovens but one point is that they take away bench space. Sometimes I see those towers where the microwave is mounted above the oven and the cooktop is separate. With these the oven is raised slightly from the floor position, often with a pot drawer underneath. I think any of these combinations is ok, just a matter of personal preference. Re: OVEN under STOVE- What do you think? 6May 23, 2008 8:15 am this brand new rental had a gas cook top and an under bench electric oven directly below it. works fine. I'm planning on having the same arrangement for the house we are building. having come from a freestanding stove It's what I'm used to. When we last built years ago (20) they only did separate components with an under bench electric oven unless you paid a fortune for an imported oven so last time it was the only way I could have a gas oven.
Going all electric this time though because there its the most practical. sigh! I miss my gas oven now and converting to full electric will be an adjustment. I can't imagine going back to electric - I'd go with bottle gas for my stove if you couldn't get a natural gas line. After 4 years - we're in! That's what we have in our current house (also gas heater in dining room) but bottled gas is a pain and very expensive, you even have to pay yearly rental for the bottles and you need 2 bottles so if one runs out you can switch to the other one. Luckily our new house, though only 1km away, is on mains gas. Re: OVEN under STOVE- What do you think? 9May 23, 2008 9:54 am Raz Hi Mike, Thanks for the really quick reply. DH often cooks a roast on the weekend and so we are in the kitchen together and find that we get in each others way eg I'm trying to make the gravy while he is trying to get the roast out of the oven....it drives us crazy. I am of the theory "you can never have enough bench space" I resented losing bench space last time even wiht a large kitchen and don;t want to be reduced to a smaller kitchen. Yes we could go gas bottle stonecutter but using gas to heat the house would not be practical and even using gas to be the boost for our hot water system was not the recommended boost for our solahart so we've decided to give up on gas altogether. It will be less expensive. I rang a chef friend and got some advice "within budget" on what sort of stove top to pick if i had to go electric.
In this new rental the gas gauge is faulty as we discovered 3 wks ago when the gas bottle ran out. hubby was of the opinion that he only wanted to get 1 gas bottle at a time and that we would just replace it when it was close to empty. Should have been a great idea ( according to DH) except the gas bottle dropped to empty from 3/4 full. ouch! Even the brand new full repacement bottle hasn't registered as a full bottle so it seems the gauge is faulty. Re: OVEN under STOVE- What do you think? 14May 24, 2008 7:14 pm Kexkez

But on the other side and offset so both cooks can enjoy cooking at the same time. Steve Re: OVEN under STOVE- What do you think? 15May 25, 2008 9:56 am Hello,
I am sorry I have not replied to you all earlier for all your thoughtful input and suggestions. I am really concerned now as I have problem with the my builder in that the tender prices keep increasing all the time. Will come back to the oven / stove debate once I sort this issue out. Thank you all Raz If you think you can, you can. We've always had wall ovens in our kitchens, and had to have one in our recent reno as we wanted a double oven. The few times I've used an underbench oven I always get a faceful of hot steam as I open the door which standing over it - another advantage of having a wall oven. (Though I do agree with the other posts about losing bench space - we could have done with an extra 60cm of bench in our small kitchen!) I almost choked holding that comment back Fiona Re: OVEN under STOVE- What do you think? 19May 28, 2008 5:55 pm That's the way I've always had oven & hotplates, and never had a problem. It's not that way in the rental we're in, and is no better (or worse!) I have never had gas cooktop until this (rental) place, and I don't know why everyone raves abot it - I was just as happy with electric . I'm having induction hotplates in my new place (we're going to replace what PD put in - long story...for another time!!!) which are just as responsive, and a lot safer than gas (..just in time for when the kids are old enough to be far less at risk!!!!LOL!) So, I guess it really is a personal choice, and what you feel comfortable with! Re: OVEN under STOVE- What do you think? 20May 29, 2008 11:54 pm Hello all,
Between faceful's of hot steam and taking something hot out of the oven, and extra bench space ...... however shall I ever choose. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Mike.. what makes you come up with these lines??? Now if and when I ever build my home I shall never be able to look at the oven , underbench or otherwise in the same light!!! Raz If you think you can, you can. No. It's not original. Hence the question, just hoping someone would… 2 2077 My daughter and son in law are about to start building, they are having a 600mm induction cook top and 900mm oven.
