Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Mar 26, 2014 10:47 pm Our kitchen was renovated not long before we bought this house--about 8 years ago. Fitting quality is average, not fancy. We've lived with it with (mostly) no problems, and haven't bothered to update the look, even though it's very bland. Now we are thinking about selling and wondering whether it's worth spending a small amount of time and money (small!) changing one or more elements of the room. --bone vinyl wrap cupboard doors and trim (my least favourite element as it's so hard to clean), gold knobs --bone walls --beige tiled splashback, white grout --cream window trims --patterned laminated benchtop with colours from offwhite to beige, and a tiny bit of light grey-brown --bone polyester(?) blind (about 1m square) --cream board on the back of cupboards (facing family/dining room) --white oven, dishwasher and fridge --stainless steel sink --floor is radiata pine, sealed. Close to original colour (not darkened) Mostly it's in pretty good condition and, with a really good clean, would probably look OK. The exception is the window trim which needs some work throughout the house, at least on the sills. The house in in Canberra and is around the median price point for the suburb, and the suburb is around the median for Canberra. Any thoughts or options? Re: Is too much beige barely enough? 2Mar 26, 2014 11:04 pm Can you paint the walls a different colour? think about if you were to buy your house Would you redo the kitchen? You don't want to spent money on it if the buyer will take it out. A good clean and maybe placing so white items may help the cream brown look Re: Is too much beige barely enough? 3Mar 27, 2014 11:54 am Thanks 2-cupcakes-pls. We could paint the walls. The same cream was used right through the house, and we have only added to colour to the bathroom and one bedroom so far. For the living room and kitchen/family/dining I thought about using brown/cream shades with varying textures (pearl, suede, etc) If I bought the house now, I would be tempted to change the kitchen, mostly the cupboards to make them more useable (it's livable but could certainly be better) and add some colour at the same time. If I had more money and time, I'd change the tiled splashback as well. You are right, the buyer may well not prefer whatever changes we make. So perhaps the cheapest and easiest options are best: --cleaning --add some accessories to break up the neutrals (flowers, tea towels) --maybe a new blind if the old one doesn't clean up well. It's a bit cheap and nasty. Re: Is too much beige barely enough? 4Mar 27, 2014 12:49 pm Agree with the above - give it all a good clean and fix anything that's broken. Replacing the splashback tiles might update the look without costing too much and even replacing the gold knobs with handles (chrome colour if its not too cold against the rest of the colour scheme) can make a huge difference. The knobs should just unscrew and you can use this hole as the first hole then drill a second if you go for handles. Lastly if the budget extends that far consider new bench tops and/or replace cupboard doors (even if its just overhead cupboards and you have a more two tone look). Best of luck with it. http://camdenbuild.blogspot.com.au/ by invite only please pm me Re: Is too much beige barely enough? 5Mar 27, 2014 1:09 pm Thanks robbie. New handles is a good idea. Chrome or silver would kind of blend with the sink. I wondered about painting the existing cupboard doors. There is a primer that will stick to the vinyl wrap and allow pretty much any paint to bond to it. It we did go for painting or replacing the doors, what colour scheme and finish do you think might work? Re: Is too much beige barely enough? 6Mar 27, 2014 1:47 pm To suggest colours it might be best if you could post a photo. PS take a look at your taps as well if they old maybe replace them. http://camdenbuild.blogspot.com.au/ by invite only please pm me Most of the time, council will push you out to a private certifier as it ties up their limited resources.
