Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Mar 11, 2014 7:40 am Gents, I've bought a granite-top kitchen island a couple of months ago from Knotts Pine tuggerah. A little while back it started staining the wipe-cloth black. I've wiped it off a number of times, but every time the paper wipe comes away stained black. It's a bit worrying, since food is often put there - and I do not know what is the nature of the stain. I went back to the store, and they said two things: - I should have cleaned it with water only (we've used ajax once or twice) - they know nothing about what it is or how to fix this as it's imported from Vietnam(I think it was) We've not been given any information on it, up front, and I had no idea that it requires special maintenance, hence the cleaner used. Now, optically it's perfect, it's shiny & smooth. The staining is the problem. I'm wondering if any of you guys know what it could be and what to do with it? Thanks in advance! Have you called other stone masons and asked for advice? I did not even know where to look to be honest. Also I feel a bit awkward to turn to a local granite/furniture company, since I've bought from a competitor here. Leaning on them feels a bit incorrect to me. I was hoping someone has seen this before. At the shop they said they've sold a good number of these ("hundreds" - that I'm suspicious of, but anyway) and apparently I'm the only one who comes back with this. They have offered no solution either. (i.e. I was expecting that they'd send out someone - but as I've mentioned they said they've no idea as it's an import, and they don't know squat about granite) The furniture is only a few months old. Its an import, so what? They should still warrant the product they sell! If they don't know how to fix it they should replace it! If you get no luck I would call the office of fair trading and get some advice! Their only "power" is to make a phone call, then tell me that I can start a small courts case. Waste of time if you ask me. Granite tops need to be sealed every year or two. You will need to purchase a granite sealer and seal the top before it has anything spilt on it, otherwise you will have great difficulty removing any stains. Once the top is seal, you should only need to use warm soapy water to clean. hope this helps With 25 years kitchen experience and a passion for what I do, I have joined this forum to offer advice or at least my opinion on all things relevant to kitchens. Re: Granite benchtop staining everything black 10Mar 26, 2014 12:00 pm The Granite top you have is probably from India or China, in order to get that nice black finish they DYE their granites as the Black look is very popular and they get more money for it. They dye the granite because the colour might have been strong enough or very patchy. You can seal the granite but it will probably keep doing this as the dye leaches out. Black granites are rare and expensive, therefor the trade in this type of practice will continue. True black granites will not stain anything that is laying on them. Re: Granite benchtop staining everything black 12Aug 12, 2014 7:45 pm My parents in law have a genuine 60mm black granite benchtop which has been there at least 15 years. It looks like new and never stains anything, ever. I would be back at the shop if I was you, seems you have been taken for a ride on a poor quality product. Unfortunately one of them has been permanently stained by some diluted phosphoric acid -… 0 907 0 9826 The warning is on the sticker on the door too. Second the aluminium powdercoat 6 18204 |
