Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Mar 04, 2014 7:36 pm We have just received a quote for a new kitchen, over $32k before appliances and floor Seems to be in the cabinets, glass splashback, stone bench tops and drawers, was told a big kitchen, estimate of say 4m on two walls and a large island, soft close drawers. Where can we save some costs? Re: New kitchen costs 2Mar 04, 2014 8:24 pm Just get another quote. Did you get your quote from a big kitchen company? Try getting a quote from a small cabinet maker. Get another quote and stay away from the big kitchen companies. A smaller operator or cabinet maker will give you a better job for a lot less! We just bought a beautiful kitchen off there, no benchtops or appliances. There's also companies selling their ex display kitchens etc Gumtree, Trading Post have a few also. Re: New kitchen costs 5Mar 07, 2014 5:58 pm You possible can save money by altering your design. Ideally show us your plans. Eg, choose large drawers rather than many smaller ones. With large I mean 800-1000mm width. I do not agree with the comment that a smaller company is better or cheaper. Are your drawers and hinges by BLUM? You can switch to Hettich and Grass, both are cheaper. Have you chosen P2O for your drawers? What brand/design door handles, if any, have you picked? If your bench is quartz stone, what thickness have you chosen? If you go for only 20mm it is cheaper. Or choose a standard range. What are the cabinet doors made of? You maybe can choose a cheaper surface (not vinyl wrap pls). Cheaper kitchen designs use plastic legs, my kitchen manufacturer is making frames as plinths. We paid a lot for our kitchen but I wanted certain drawers, surfaces and so on but not all kitchen makers where able to do it. There are surely more options, but best show us your plans with imageshack.com cheer Evelin Re: New kitchen costs 6Mar 10, 2014 7:06 am Evelin I do not agree with the comment that a smaller company is better or cheaper. This is why 9 times out of 10 they are cheaper and better than the big boys! There really isn't and difference in price between Blum and Hetttich. Grass is cheaper. I totally agree that solid kickboard frames are far far better. They should be made from plywood though. Where I live, Port Kennedy, an hours drive down from Perth, none of the 4 companies, all small, weren't able or willing to give me a quote. The main hurdle was that they don't use BLUM, which I wanted, and possibly my specs was quite detailed, like Intivo here and Antaro there. Plus, I heard quite a few story about problems with smaller kitchen makers who either did a bad job or disappeared with an unfinished kitchen and loss of money. Since I had no recommendation of any kitchen maker I choose what was the best and safest option for us at that time. It doesn't matter to me if I pay $1000 or so dollars more or not. The kitchen I have now is the best kitchen I ever had in my life and it is my last kitchen too which will serve me for the next 15-20 yrs since I have no intention to move. The kitchen maker we choose was on the basis, that a) they gave us a quote, b) from the start they took us around in the workshop, c) their display room was in top order not a single sample was missing, d)they were willing to build what I wanted and e) they weren't a 2 hrs drive away from us, just 1 hr. I also liked their payment schedule which gave me the confidence that they are not closing down in the near future. One company that we were too far away, about 45 min. When we ordered our kitchen we were told that in the 12 months or so before, 12 kitchen makers closed down in Perth. There must be a reason for it. One I believe is that they want to undercut the competition with lower quotes. What we also found that some companies don't read my spec properly. The quote comes back in vinyl wrap for instance or the wrong height. If they are not able to do a proper quote how do they work? When the kitchen was finished in the workshop they asked us to come down with the oven and dishwasher to fit them in. We could see what we get, the kitchen stood there as later in our house. Ok this may be true for a small area with little to no choice but not so for large areas like Sydney! You have to deliver a quality product at a competitive price or you don't last long! I build quality kitchens for a living and know many many others in the industry. It seems that the smaller guys with far lower overheads that want to keep a good name consistently deliver lower priced better quality kitchens! Have you read some of the stories on hear about some of the big guys? I just don't want you previous statement to influence others that don't have your full story. In your case you had no option. Went to a 2nd local supplier, nice big showroom, and on the strength of some photos and estimate of size of our kitchen and summary of what we wanted to do said we were starting at $30k before appliances, so seems we are in the ballpark here before the fine tuning. Maybe I am expecting too much in terms of quality and value, but all kitchens these days seem to be standard with soft close fittings (Blum), stone benchtops (quantum quartz), glass splashback, big pot drawers and corner units, gloss finish cupboard doors, and under-cupboard lighting. Also need to strip back to 4 walls, all the trades and then the cost of dumping a reasonably good kitchen with solid oak timber doors and cupboards (20 yrs old), and laminate benchtops. Maybe I have to convince the missus of a partial upgrade, appliances, benchtops and splashback, if the old frame can be retained, is this an option?? Re: New kitchen costs 10Mar 26, 2014 12:22 pm Doing a makeover by replacing doors and keeping existing cabinets is not always good. If you choose to upgrade to better hinges like Blum than they don't always fit therefor more drilling holes and has to be done on site so not always line up good. The other thing is if the cabinets or house has moved over time and the levels are all out doesn't help with the end result. Try using Gloss Laminate instead of Poly doors it will drop the price, only use 20mm stone tops makes no difference in strength. On the island don't run the stone on the sides this can add big dollars. Re: New kitchen costs 11Mar 26, 2014 9:22 pm Splashers Try using Gloss Laminate instead of Poly doors it will drop the price,. Moreso when there is an island bench with heavy stone tops involved. Having used all of the other systems in the past, Novapro & Innotech drawers are not in the same category as Blum. I would skimp on the fancy glass splashback or go a thinner stone top than substitute out the Blum hardware. Fomica Snowdrift and Warm white in a gloss melamine is a great cost affective product. it gives you the high end glossy look at a reasonable price. I do alot of kitchens of late using these two colours and my clients love the look of it. They are more like a %60 gloss level, but handle wear and tear better than 2pac Poly. Re: New kitchen costs 14Mar 29, 2014 9:44 am Chinaplate1 then the cost of dumping a reasonably good kitchen with solid oak timber doors and cupboards (20 yrs old), and laminate benchtops. Gumtree or Ebay the old kitchen. one of my clients did this and got $2500 for her old melamine kitchen and they removed it. She was stoked as she was just going to skip bin it. Re: New kitchen costs 15Mar 30, 2014 3:14 pm If you find a good reputable kitchen supplier they can be similar prices to Bunnings but much better quality. People that say this can't be done just haven't found any yet. It doesn't mean they don't exist. Of course being in a major city helps with this. Hi, I am in the process of planning to start a kitchen vinyl wrapping business in Auckland, and I am seeking information regarding the average costs for the installation… 0 1943 Assuming the structure of your cabinetry is good then I would DIY everything as follows: - replace your counter tops entirely, - replace all drawer runners with soft close… 1 4778 I am not sure whether Perth has its own way of doing things in regards to this. Most of Perth has class A (sandy soil), except for some areas near rivers or hills. 2 13063 |
