Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Mar 03, 2014 12:28 pm Hi all,
We're not at the stage of finalising our kitchen or anything, but that still hasn't stopped me from playing with the kitchen layout to maximise space for everything to fit. It is 3.2x2.4 in a galley design. So what I am thinking is on the wall it has the fridge and the 900mm freestanding oven. Now my main question is in regards to what to do about the rangehood. I know many say the wall canopy rangehood becomes a feature in the kitchen. But I am leaning towards choosing a slideout rangehood to gain that little bit extra cupboard space. Would that be worth it? I know it isn't much, but better than nothing, right? I am putting pot drawers either side of the oven as well. Also due to my bad back and bad knees the default in a lot of these new house plans is to stick the microwave underneath the island counter, so I'm also trying to move that as well. This is kind of what I was thinking, by putting the microwave underneath one of the overheads. As part of our inclusions we get a trim kit with a microwave, so that would still work? I've never had a trim kit so unsure if they need slightly larger sizes or not. Re: Rangehood Option 2Mar 03, 2014 12:37 pm Hi Mai, Our new home that we are building came with an canopy range hood and I have changed it to a pullout range hood and cupboards. Not so much for the space, as you can only really use it for spices but a pull out range hood does not require the same level of cleaning! Good luck! The extra storage cupboard above is handy BUT anything you put in there will get oily. I've lived in 2 houses so far with that set up and in both everything had a sticky feeling to it and smelt of oil if it was placed in that cupboard. Also once the flu (?) Is in the cupboard there isn't much space anyway. Re: Rangehood Option 4Mar 03, 2014 1:02 pm xxkatxx One word of advice with the pullout range hood. A lot of rangehoods are not ducted or if they have have been ducted badly. Then yes you will get oil over everything in the cabinet. If its ducted correctly then you wont have a problem. We have an undermounted rangehood at home and my wife keeps all the cooking alcohol and other glass containers above and they have never had any oil on them at all. You say there wont be much space anyway, possibly if its a 600mm rangehood but anything over that if its ducted properly you will get decent storage either side of the duct. I would use a 900mm undermounted rangehood. They work just as well as a slide out but are completely concealed. If they are ducted properly you will have good storage either side of the duct. There actually has been a big move away from canopy rangehoods. I was fitting them every 2nd kitchen now it would be lucky to be 1 in 10! I am not a fan of microwaves in overheads. As you can see in the photo they are a completely different depth to standard overheads and also pantry/fridge cabinets. I also believe that the microwave in the photo is actually far to high. Its almost dangerous at that height getting hot things in and out at shoulder level. Depending on your kitchen design there could be other options. Yeah the rangehood would be 900mm to match the oven. I'll make a note for undermounted then. I guess the other alternative is perhaps something like the dual microwave space/coffee machine space (in image below) and bring it lower instead of the slim drawer. Image from: http://www.plantationhomes.com.au/new-home-design-options OR, instead of as high as the photo I found, bring the microwave down halfway into the space between bench and overhead and the space underneath for smaller items on the counter? Re: Rangehood Option 7Mar 03, 2014 2:23 pm I'd definitely prefer the microwave to be in a stack like in those pictures instead of underneath an overhead. The middle one looks a bit high though. My advice about the oil was just from previous experience. One was a brand new house and flued correctly. The stickiness seemed to come through the doors not from the flu itself which was sealed off. Nothing was dripping in oil just a slight sticky feeling. Maybe I just cook too many oily stir fries! Re: Rangehood Option 8Mar 03, 2014 6:55 pm You never have a fridge against wall as you’ve drawn.
