Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Feb 26, 2014 6:41 pm Our cabinet maker has been a right pain in the a $$ but he finally turned up today to install our kitchen and laundry. We selected formica charred oak gloss for the kitchen but he rocks up today with something that looks similar but is Amarind branded. Is this better/worse/similar to formica gloss? Really annoyed he never said anything and just re selected on our behalf. Other question is what are the under sides of overhead cabinets supposed to look like? I was expecting this: http://i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u403/xxkat86xx/20140226_153039_zpsivesqapj.jpg But got this: http://i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u403/xxkat86xx/Mobile%20Uploads/20140226_155715_zpshwh5a65j.jpg He reckons it is standard practice but I think it's lazy and cheap Re: Random cabinet questions 2Feb 26, 2014 7:52 pm With the first pic the cabinets are sized so the carcass is 16mm shorter than the doors so you can put a dress panel underneath. Is he a custom joiner or did you select from a modular range to save money? Do you have handles on your doors or push catch? If so you can still put one of those dress panels underneath your existing cabs. I would suggest you put one along the top for symmetry too. It is standard practice so you should have asked for it to get it that way, I have never make them like that unless asked. Sorry I'm a kitchen designer by the way not just speaking from a random pov Finally a way to stop those annoying banging blinds! http://www.stopnoisyblinds.com.au Breeze-Ins Pty Ltd 1300 557 803 nathan@stopnoisyblinds.com.au Re: Random cabinet questions 3Feb 26, 2014 8:28 pm Hmm it is all custom but I went through a few display homes today and they all have the coloured panel underneath. None of them are finished like ours never seen it like that until today.. it just looks so nasty Re: Random cabinet questions 5Feb 26, 2014 8:47 pm Changing colour/brand without letting you know is not on! if you have all your documents i wouldn't give final payment untillall your issues are resolved. Having no under panels with a dark colour like that is just crap, If i were you i would make him replace all the overhead doors and put in an under panel. a white box should only be seen when opening a door in my opinion. Re: Random cabinet questions 6Feb 27, 2014 7:06 am As said above changing brands/colours without letting you know is not on. I would be asking for a large discount or that he uses the brand you asked for. The way they have finished the bottom of the overheads is how most cheap/nasty cabinets are finished. I normally do it one of two ways depending on the type of rangehood and handle. You can use a dress panel as you showed in your picture or you can laminate the underside of the overheads with one piece if white laminate. Cheap nasty cabinet making. A lot of my clients agonize over their colours. I would never just swap to another product. I'd say your cabinet maker gets better pricing on the Amarind product so decided to make a bit more margin out of your job, hoping you nay not notice. And not finishing the underside of the overheads is budget. You'd be lucky if there was $100 worth of material in that. He will say that's how he does it but it is not good practice. We found out which company made the cabinets for the rest of our house during the build and will contact them to do the job! Thanks guys!! Re: Random cabinet questions 10Mar 01, 2014 2:42 pm I would never have thought the cabinetmaker to give a full refund and not do the job? over something as little as a couple sheets of board to be replaced to the right colour and under panels. as a cabinet maker myself i cant see the sense in abandoning a job over a few hundred dollars and some labour, how odd. Re: Random cabinet questions 11Mar 01, 2014 2:55 pm He reckons one of his machines died and he was paying someone else to do the work. I think he was also out of his depth and I made it known how much he had screwed us around over the past couple of weeks and I think he could see there was no way he was going to get a final payment. Doing the whole kitchen in the wrong brand and colour is his problem. ..I'm amazed he offered full refund though but certainly not complaining! If our account is lacking the refund in 2 weeks time it will go further Re: Random cabinet questions 12Mar 02, 2014 8:13 am xxkatxx He reckons one of his machines died and he was paying someone else to do the work. If our account is lacking the refund in 2 weeks time it will go further Big deal if one of his machines died. As cabinet makers we all out source at times. Its very easy to have someone supply all the cabinets and doors cut ready for assembly. I also find it very strange that he is going to abandon the kitchen and give a full refund. It wouldn't actually cost him that much to replace all the doors and have a happy customer. Fingers crossed it goes smoothly for you from now on. We were pretty surprised but very happy! I think he's too embarrassed to return with how much he has screwed us around and how much he has screwed up the job... Re: Random cabinet questions 14Mar 14, 2014 8:40 pm Well can't say I'm surprised but he didn't refund any of our money in the fortnight he said he would. Got him on the phone tonight calling from a different number and he doesn't seem too fussed.. Re: Random cabinet questions 15Mar 14, 2014 10:08 pm did you sign a contract with him kat? i read in another one of your posts in the home builder section that you forked out 50% in advance? is there a paper trail for the money? you also mentioned that hes working from a home workshop. does he own a legit business? todo kitchens he needs a builders licence. acting as a business without one can be a $20.000 fine. Re: Random cabinet questions 16Mar 14, 2014 10:45 pm He has a business (a few different abns after a good search!) and didn't seem concerned that we were going through consumer affairs. No contract has my signature on it but there is a money trail which matches the quote/payment plan, nothing was paid in cash. Have receipts for both payments. He said on the phone he was going to put the payment through but seeing as we called he doesn't want to any more. Wtf?! What idiot wouldn't call when the deadline was up for a $5500 refund? Re: Random cabinet questions 18Mar 14, 2014 10:59 pm well depending on his situation he might be owing alot of people money. i wouldn't be phased to if in a couple of weeks i knew i was going to be filing for bankruptcy. and if he does that you could be on a very long list of people trying to get cash back. thats worst case senario but still a huge possibility. builders licence needs to be displayed is all his advertising business cards ect . any paperwork he gives you. it sounds like he doesn't have one at all Re: Random cabinet questions 20Mar 14, 2014 11:06 pm guys like this deal with this all the time. i have meet a few of them, he wont be losing any sleep over this. come to think of it he probably changed the colours on your kitchen because his laminex/formica account is suspended. im not a huge expert on the legal side of what he has done but the idea and the laws around mandatory contracts is to protect you and the cabinet maker. but you haven't signed one so yeah very bad situation to be in. Personally, considering your layout (study/work desks in bedrooms), I don't think you have any other option but to leave NW windows and make them as big as possible e.g.… 7 10480 We had this happen to us last year and got charged a variation.
