Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Feb 25, 2014 2:07 pm Hi, we are planning an extension and a renovation of our current 3x1. The renovation will involve removing interior walls to create an open plan living space and replacing our 1970's kitchen. We need some help planning the design of new kitchen. Our kitchen floor plan currently look's something like this: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ To keep costs down we were thinking it best to keep sink plumbing and gas oven/cooktop in the same place. The kitchen is small (2.4mx3m) so we really want to maximise space as we will be losing our current overhead cupboards by knocking out the wall. This is what I've come up with, but there is no pantry yet as I cant figure out where it would go as there is only 25cm between fridge and start of window only 55cm from right corner wall to start of window (which is where I would have preferred a corner pantyr). Microwave would be in an overhead shelf to the side of the stand alone cooktop. I was thinking a half wall splash back type thing on the half of the breakfast bar to hide tea/coffee/kettle/toaster items but still leave enough for 2-3 bar stools on the other side. Re: Small Kitchen Design Help 2Feb 25, 2014 6:23 pm could you carry on with base cabinets left from the fridge under the window to the left wall? A pantry doesn't have to be a tall cabinet. All could be stored in drawers and pullouts. If there is only space for 400mm deep cabinets then I would go for doors. Re: Small Kitchen Design Help 3Feb 25, 2014 9:31 pm Hi J54, I think Evelin's idea is a good one if that is possible under that window. Another suggestion though is to ask whether you need the kitchen completely open to both the living and dining area? Would there be a chance of still having some higher cupboards above that bench. So instead of completely demolishing that wall perhaps there is a chance to punch a very large hole allowing it to act as a generous servery to provide a visual link between the kitchen and the living area but still providing upper cupboard space. You can still have the bench wide enough for people to sit at stools. You could build in lights to the underside of these cupboards to light the bench area. Also, shelves could be added to the remainder of the wall from the living room side so it could be feature joinery. Just things to think about I guess. I wish you the best of luck. Cheers, Jenny. I know you wrote that there are only 50cm to the window but the high cabinets could be 40 cm deep. Or is there not enough space for the table? What would be the distance between the end of the kitchen bench and the wall and how big is your table? Re: Small Kitchen Design Help 6Feb 25, 2014 10:52 pm Ah the left wall is going to be a sliding door to the patio Eventually! I havent put it on this drawing but that's the plan. The 50cm measurement is the right kitchen corner wall to the kitchen window Re: Small Kitchen Design Help 7Feb 26, 2014 8:04 am In similar situations I have incorporated a wall hung shallow pantry unit on an opposite wall that can look like a bit of furniture too. The last one I did consisted of 2 700 wide cabinets, 250mm depth wall hung sitting about 500mm off the floor and with 500mm wide open shelves between them. I was thinking maybe you could do something like that along that far left hand side wall near the dining.Yeah its not ideal but you will get a good pantry out of it, then back in the kitchen try to incorporate a pull out door with wire rack for storage of your more commonly used items like olive oil etc. Finally a way to stop those annoying banging blinds! http://www.stopnoisyblinds.com.au Breeze-Ins Pty Ltd 1300 557 803 nathan@stopnoisyblinds.com.au Not sure if that works?
