Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Feb 15, 2014 10:02 pm Hi all, I'm planning on renovating my kitchen. I have a tight budget of $4500. I found a kitchen cabinet maker on gumtree who is charging $4500 to renovate the whole kitchen with my choice of material. I just need to buy the stove and oven and pay a little extra if I want stone bench tops . Do you think I should look out for anything or can anyone recommend anyone who can do the renovations? Would really appreciate some suggestions. Thanks heaps!! Re: Help! 2Feb 16, 2014 2:22 pm $4500 is a very very low budget for a kitchen reno unless you are doing it yourself. I would ask him for the phone numbers of his last 2-3 jobs and try and see what sort of quality your going to get. If you want recommendations we need to know where you live. I'm located in North West Melbourne. Just so you know his quote doesn't include bench tops, splash back, or installation of oven and stove. With that price he will only be making and installing the cabinets . He wants us to remove all current cabinets and splash back as well as replace the tiles on the floor as they will get damaged. Re: Help! 4Feb 17, 2014 6:20 am That I know, for a medium kitchen finished you usually spend at least 25-30K!! Small, medium or large kitchen? What sort of hardware is he using? Does the $4500 include doors and installation? If it does its still very cheap! What sort of hardware? Do the cabinets come with solid backs? Are they flat pack cabinets? What sort of doors? You need to know answers to these questions before going ahead. They are some shady people out there that install terrible kitchens. I am not saying this guy is, I am just saying really do your homework first. You will probably find that he is a small operator working out of his garage or he gets another cabinet maker to make his kitchens for him and then just installs it. It's exactly how I started out and I provided very good quality kitchens at very low margins. You want to ensure though that you do not pay him in full until you the job is completed. This is a must! Some good questions to ask him are: 1. Does he make the kitchens him self or outsource this? (either way it doesn't really matter it's just good for you to know) 2. What kind of guarantees does he provide? 3. Can you view some previous work he has done? Best thing to do is inspect a previous job he has done. If he previous customers were happy with him they wont have a problem letting you view it. No massive alarm bells here but I would say go with your gut feeling though Kitchen Designer @ http://www.diylab.com.au Re: Help! 8Feb 17, 2014 12:19 pm PeterThomas You will probably find that he is a small operator working out of his garage or he gets another cabinet maker to make his kitchens for him and then just installs it. True, but there are also people out there sourcing cheap nasty flat packs and trying to sell them as top quality. Definitely something to watch for, hard to tell as well without seeing a previous job and knowing what to look for. If you want to upgrade the look of your benchtops without too much expense, go to a granite supplier and see if they have any off cuts that will fit your job. Offcuts are very much cheaper and you'll get a high end look with no one the wiser about how much you've spent Re: Help! 12Feb 19, 2014 10:23 am Treeseachanger Just a comment... I've bought a house 2 and a bit years ago and last year we had some major water damage on a converted pergola area… 0 7931 Yes, unless you are in a low intensity rainfall area or the area is protected from rain. Do you have access to NCC Part 2 or can you download it? I can email you a copy… 10 12512 Thankyou so much 😀 I've decided on White on white for doors and trims, White on white 50% on ceiling and Mt buller for walls. Fingers crossed it will look OK 😀 2 7158 |
