Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Feb 02, 2014 10:46 am Hey guys, I am putting a couple of bench tops outside as part of my WFO pizza oven area. I have 17mm polished granite bench tops 2000mmx850mm and I would just like a confirmation from those more knowledgeable that what I plan to do will be OK. One of the two bench tops will be sitting on a brick U shape structure (one long side and the two short sides) but the front long edge won't be supported as I am leaving it open to allow wood storage underneath. I plan to glue some 18mm HMF MDF to the underside of the granite (for support) and then lay the granite/MDF on top of the brick structure. I will then use a couple of angle steel pieces from the sides to further support the weight in the middle. I was planning to secure the bench top to the bricks by using screws through the angle steel pieces into the MDF. This will allow me to unscrew and remove the granite/MDF bench top in the future if I need to. The MDF sheet will be the size of the brick frame, not the granite bench top. There will be a 100mm overhang on the sides so the MDF will not be visible and will also be protected from rain. My main concerns are whether there will be enough support for the U shaped brick/bench top and is using HMR MDF the right product for supporting the granite bench tops. Thanks for reading and please provide any thoughts Re: outdoor granite benchtop - is this the right way? 2Feb 04, 2014 2:52 pm Your on the right track but I personally would use an exterior grade plywood and fully support the front edge with 40x40 steel attached at either side. I will use plywood instead of MDF then thanks for your suggestion.
