Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Jan 29, 2014 2:50 pm Hi everyone I'm really sorry if this sounds like a silly question but I really have no idea. Just after some advise on replacing the kitchen doors after handover. The upgrade to pannelled doors through the builder looks like its going to blow our budget so I'm looking at other options. Is this even possible? I'm assuming the cuboards wouldn't be difficult but what about the drawers? Any recomendations on where I could go for quotes would be fantastic I'm located in north western suburbs of Melbourne but happy to go elsewhere for the right price and quality. Thanks Re: Replacing kitchen doors after handover 2Jan 29, 2014 10:10 pm You could find a cabinet maker and ask. We explored the same idea but in the end it would have cost just as much as going through the builder but would have been a LOT more hassle. Essentially, with this idea, you're paying once in the base price of the house for a basic kitchen, then paying AGAIN for the fancy kitchen skins. For us, those two together about equalled the 20% mark up the builder put on the fancy kitchen and a whole lot less hassle so we just went through the builder in the end, even though we know they're charging a massive margin. Re: Replacing kitchen doors after handover 3Jan 29, 2014 10:36 pm Unless they are going to discount the kitchen for not putting any doors in, and I doubt that is remotely likely to happen, and even if they did they probably wouldn't discount it by much at all, EmyN is right, just pay the premium price and be done with it and save on the inconvenience. If you can't afford the price the builder is going to charge, then sit back and enjoy the standard doors for say the next 5 years or more, and plan for an update to the whole kitchen. Re: Replacing kitchen doors after handover 4Jan 30, 2014 1:27 am Put plain Drawers on and then get them two packed after handover. That is what was advised to me by the cabinet maker. It will save a bit of cash. Re: Replacing kitchen doors after handover 5Jan 30, 2014 9:31 am Thanks everyone for the replies. Think ill still look into the cost as through the builder will be $10,000 minimum from what the builder has told me. AussieMark are you saying its possible to keep original doors and get the two packed after handover. I didn't realise you could do that Thanks again Re: Replacing kitchen doors after handover 6Jan 30, 2014 10:04 am Emz, speak with the cabinet maker who the builder gets to do the work. In my case the cabinet maker is part of the same group but essentially a different profit center. So to win more business I guess the cabinet maker suggested instead of polytec doors he could install MDF doors which would cost no more. No credit would be given by builder. When the flooring is done he said they generally take the doors off so as not to risk damage. During that time he could send them to be two pac painted. The painting is a separate arrangement between me and the cabinet maker and would save on the builders margin. Still pretty expensive as I have a lot of drawers but overall still a saving of 3 to 4k which was quickly gobbled up elsewhere..... 2 8304 Yes, get a builder, make sure he is experienced and a registered building practitioner 5 8937 Hi, we live in an area where the black soil is prone to a lot of movement.
