Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Jan 18, 2014 8:46 am Hi We are going to be increasing the width of our kitchen to fit everything in we want and the back bench will actually be 4.8 m long so we were also considering extending the island to 4.8 as well so it is in line with the back bench. We will be having 40cm ceasarstone with waterfall ends. I think the bench will be 900mm wide. Does anyone know if there will be any issues structurally on having the bench this long? We realise that there will need to a join in the stone. Thanks in advance. Re: Island bench 4.8 m long - will there be any issues? 2Jan 18, 2014 9:10 am I wouldn't think it is a problem. I'm assuming the cupboards/base will be extended underneath the bench for the same distance. These will provide the support for the bench. When they manufacture the 40mm stone benchtops they have 2 layers, the top layer you can see and is a 20mm piece of stone, glued to the bottom of that is a piece of ply about 50 -70 mm smaller on each side, this timber also provides strength, then they fill the 50-70mm edge with another piece of 20mm thick stone to make the stone bench 40mm thick. here is a video of how it can be manufactured and some good pics. http://www.townsvillestone.com.au/stone ... g-process/ Re: Island bench 4.8 m long - will there be any issues? 3Jan 19, 2014 9:38 am We have an island that is around a similar size to what you are proposing, as HeathWilD says if it has cupboards/units underneath I think they should support the weight of the bench top. We love ours, it looks stunning and gives loads of space for food prep and also for socialising with friends whilst cooking It'll be one thing I miss when we buy a place and move! If you have the space and the finances, i say go for it, it'll look fab Re: Island bench 4.8 m long - will there be any issues? 4Jan 20, 2014 7:16 pm Thanks to you both for the feedback.
