Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Jan 17, 2014 1:53 pm I am interested to see pics and designs of island kitchen with sink and hotplate anyone has built or had installed. Of course relevant comments are always welcome - where did you get yours, is there anything you don't like or like, and so on. cheers, Bill Re: island kitchen with sink and hotplate 2Jan 17, 2014 6:01 pm The issue of having both next to each other is space. Ideally both have plenty of space on either side of each one, so having them opposite each other is common. The other thing to think about is the ducting the range hood. Re: island kitchen with sink and hotplate 3Jan 23, 2014 5:36 pm Thanks JB. When we started to think about the range hood and the fact that it is a raked ceiling the idea became less appealing. Re: island kitchen with sink and hotplate 4Jan 23, 2014 5:40 pm We only have the double sink in the island bench. The hotplates are in the main bench. Re: island kitchen with sink and hotplate 5Jan 24, 2014 10:09 pm I personally don't understand hotplates in the island. Surely the island is where guests sit/children do homework/families gather etc. I don't want heat and steam and spitting oil right there! Surely the island is where guests sit/children do homework/families gather etc. I don't want heat and steam and spitting oil right there! I tend to agree with you there. There's also the issue of rangehood which leaves you to a limit choice that has to be supported from the ceiling (in itself not a big problem, but ....). At the most, I reckon an island bench should effectively be a dry bench, no cooktop and no sink. Although a sink is a common think on islands these days, but you need to make that decision before your slab is poured. If a cooktop is going there, you need to ensure that gas is available there as well as two lots of electricity. The normal 2.5mm for standard GPO's and 4mm for the oven that will be on its own circuit, so provision in the slab for two lots of electrical conduit(unless your sparky is happy to run both lots through either 32 or 40mm conduit). Re: island kitchen with sink and hotplate 8Jan 25, 2014 10:04 pm I do however like sinks on island benches (unless you have a gorgeous window you could put the sink beneath!). As a Mum I spend a lot of time at the sink unfortunately and I don't want to have my back to guests/kids all the time. And a sink in the island means I face the action and can keep an eye on the kids too. Re: island kitchen with sink and hotplate 10Jan 26, 2014 9:30 am If you don't like a big island rangehood hanging from the ceiling and you're thinking about getting an induction cooktop, you can have a look at the Bora cooktop with built-in exhaust. I had a look in person and surprisingly it's not as bulky as some other downdraft systems and you can still put a drawer or two under the cooktop. http://www.bora.com/en/bora-products/bora-basic/ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair Are you going to have the frame exposed or are you cladding it with something.
