Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Jan 09, 2014 10:49 am We are looking to do a renovation on our current kitchen and can't figure out whether to go with a builder who specialises in kitchens or the large kitchen companies. What are the pros and cons for each? Any recommendations for either in SE Melbourne would be great too. Thank you. You get a far better job from smaller companies. There are small kitchen companies and cabinet makers that will give you personalized service and a much better quality product. Big companies have large overheads and its the customer who pays for it. My prices for a kitchen are usually around $5000 - $8000 less than the big companies for the same design but with better construction and quality! As CEK said, builders will just put a mark up on the cabinet maker he uses to do the work. The large kitchen companies have to pay for their shopfronts and the fancy dude who rolls up to quote for them in his expensive car. All those costs are just built into the price you pay. Most small businesses are well equipped to handle whatever renovations you might need and have very good experience dealing with this. Small often means you get personalized service from the guy who is actually going to be working in your home. Personally I think that is a bonus as you get to gauge the person before you commit. Big doesn't always mean better. We've yet to go and see them but the recommendation has come from a very reliable source - an retired builder who really know his stuff. Hope this helps. Re: Builder or kitchen company for kitchen Reno? 5Jan 20, 2014 10:18 am Thanks all for your responses and recommendations. Interestingly we visited 2 of the larger kitchen companies at the start of this project...both of who told us within the first 10 minutes that we could definitely find cheaper elsewhere. A strange intro we thought!!
