Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Jan 09, 2014 2:40 am When building a new house (on concrete slab) does the flooring (timber or tile) in the kitchen go wall to wall, under the built-in kitchen cabinetry? - so if cabinetry is changed in future, the floor is uniform; or do the kitchen cupboards go in first and the floor go only up to the kick boards? - which would save a little money on flooring. But if you're having a floating floor it is installed with a few mm gap b/n it & the wall- covered by skirting or scotia. You don't want a gap b/n the floorboards and the kick boards, but I don't think you'd put scotia on a kickboard either. So the flooring would have to go under the kickboards at least? But then wouldn't the kickboards have to be cut to allow the boards underneath? It seems quite common to get flooring companies to come in after hand-over - when I assume the kitchen is finished? Re: Which comes first: kitchen or floor? 2Jan 09, 2014 8:05 am It can be done either way but is better to do the floor first. If you do the floor last and ever have a leak it is almost impossible to get the water out from the small well that is formed! I guess the same would apply for a laundry or bathroom as well then ? get the tiling down on to the entire floor, then add your cabinetry afterwards. You may spend a bit more initially but the finish is so much better. I've seen quad trim used to hide the gap up against kickboards, end panels etc and it detracts so much from a quality kitchen not to mention what CEK says above. Stewie Re: Which comes first: kitchen or floor? 7Jan 09, 2014 3:47 pm kylie40 Are kitchen cabinets attached to the floor or just the wall? It depends on how they are made. All my cabinets are attached to the floor and walls for overheads. A lot of custom built kitchens would also be attached to the floor. The larger companies normally don't fix to the floor. Will there not be a nice finish up against the cabinetry? Why not? I don't really understand how it would look different. It's just a slight line but noticeable to the trained eye. Most people won't even notice it. Stewie Re: Which comes first: kitchen or floor? 11Jan 21, 2014 10:12 pm I noticed in a display home this weekend that the flooring was done after even the skirting! So instead of the skirting sitting on top of the flooring, the floor covering creeps up the skirting, making 67mm look decidedly skinny. Thinking about building Rawson's Huntley 27 Thank you.
