If its stone then the sink area is the best place for the join! You see far less than you normally would. I would never put a laminate join in the sink area. I'm sure I did read there was a regulation or standard for it but the closest I could find was on the build.com.au site for Kitchen bench regulations. Might have to contact the manufacturer. I wouldn't put a join in the sink area as it would be difficult to join properly and could let water it.
