Here's a photo of part of the kitchen in the "new" place. Unfortunately the photo's were taken at night and don't do any of the colors anything justice....no matter. In purchasing I'd budgeted to replace the oven, hotplate, and dishwasher. The rangehood is in good nick. The current wall oven is electric and the cooktop is gas. My DW being vertically challenged prefers to have an underbench oven because quite rightly it's difficult to take stuff in and out when you are five foot nuthin'.... What we are going to do is get rid of the wall oven and the space left behind will be made good and become a microwave nook. May need a bit of cabinetry work but fairly easy to do for a cabinet maker. The hotplate will be replaced by a ceramic cooktop....got one in the current place and love it. The electric underbench oven will be a go under the hotplate and will be a standard 600 mm wide jobbo. The cupboard under the bench is about 800 mm wide, the power and gas for the current hotplate comes from this cupboard (see second photo). Am I right in thinking that the gas can be capped off at the wall by a gasfitter, and that the power point will need to move to the adjacent cupboard to feed both the hot plate and oven. The carcasses are all double skinned, and the remaining gap (difference between 800 and 600 will need to be blanked off using the same laminate (could be cut from the left over doors with edges relaminated). I'm also presuming that the oven cavity is completely stripped including the back board. And I'm assuming that the sequence would be to: - strip out the cooktop and oven (gastfitter/electrician) to cap off the gas and move powerpoints - I can strip the cabinet out from under the bench as it's double skinned - gasfitter/electrician comes back and fits new appliances - cabinet maker comes back and makes good underbench and existing wall oven space for microwave nook. How exciting, you have the keys Now you know I cant give you technical answers, but to add to your thoughts on the oven surround, get the cabinet maker to make a new surround to fit the oven you buy, it will look neater and more professional. Does that make sense? When I had a new oven put in the cabinet maker had the oven delivered to him and he cut the hole out in the panel to fit the oven. He also did the same for the microwave. I assume it wont be hard to match your laminate. Start now cabinet makers tend to take forever!! The original builder of the house is still around and has been very helpful in providing drawings and leads on their tradies, apparently they don't change their tradies over as they're a bit selective. And he told me this when there was no chance of buying a house from him The original cabinet maker is still around and still works for them, it's the only cabinet maker the builder uses. Gave me the old "tell him Louey sent you". So you had the oven physically delivered to him? mmm....donuts Homer Simpson 1956- Links: Site Costs Ready Reckoner | H1 Addiction Medical Advice | Château TDL: The Backyard Re: Kitchen Appliance Changeover & Minor Reno.... 4May 09, 2008 10:05 pm to_do_list The original cabinet maker is still around and still works for them, it's the only cabinet maker the builder uses. Paula Re: Kitchen Appliance Changeover & Minor Reno.... 5May 09, 2008 10:09 pm There is a good chance that your oven will require it's own 15 amp circuit (probably already has one where it is) and this will need to be re routed to the new location.
If you are keeping the benchtop make sure that your new cooktop is the same size or bigger than the existing unit otherwise filling the hole could be a problem. If you are planning on just covering over the space either side of the oven you might not even need to remove the existing cabinet. It should be possible to put in some cleats and/or dividers to locate the oven on and just fix the cover panels onto them. But if you do want to remove the existing cabinet and replace it with a 600 unit it should not be too hard to get the old carcase out. You will need to find some way of securing the new carcase across the 100mm gap to the cabinets either side. Before you count on getting the doors cut down for filler panels and re edged, make sure that whoever will be doing the job for you is capable of supplying a small amount of edging - it has happened to me before that I only needed a single edge refinished but the cabientmaker would have needed to buy a 100 metre roll of edging to match my board. That'd be a bonus....I'm planning on covering up as its only 100 mm odd wide not really useful....except maybe for towels but there's already one of those racks in the kitchen. Speaking out of complete ignorance here....if I don't take the carcass out the heat generated by the oven won't do anything to the carcass...I know they are insulated and vented etc but they are sufficient cool on the outer surface? External oven temperature should not be a problem. Ovens are often mounted in cabinets that fit tight around the sides and if there is an opening at the back of the cabinet it won't be providing much circulation as the whole carcase is sealed in by the benchtop above, so (in my opinion) there should not be an issue with fitting it in this manner. Additionally, if you choose to go the path of keeping the existing cabinet you will have a nice 84mm gap either side of the oven.
