Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Oct 09, 2013 10:30 am Hey Everyone Has one removed their laminate and installed stone benches right after hand over and was there an expense in this? Stone may be just out of our budget if the builder does it (for all bathrooms) however we know a stone mason that would make it way cheaper. I think it might be abit of a hassle though with the basins etc. Re: Stone benches post handover 2Oct 09, 2013 12:35 pm Are you talking about the kitchen bench top as well as the bathrooms? The answer is different from the kitchen to bathroom Cutting Edge Kitchens and Cabinet Making http://cuttingedgekitchens.net.au http://www.facebook.com/pages/Cutting-Edge-Kitchens/290484196676 Mobile : 0419 430 575 PH: 9452 4772 Fax :9452 4772 cuttingedgekitchens@outlook.com Re: Stone benches post handover 3Oct 09, 2013 12:39 pm Hi there, No the kitchen bench had stone included it would be for the 2 bathrooms, ensuite and laundry. Thanks Sarah H1 Thread - viewtopic.php?f=31&t=61557 Re: Stone benches post handover 4Oct 10, 2013 5:37 am sazzy91 Hi there, No the kitchen bench had stone included it would be for the 2 bathrooms, ensuite and laundry. Thanks Sarah Ah ok because you posted the question in the kitchen section which had me scratching my head. Bathrooms will be easy. You will need your plumber to do a disconnect and reconnect when you swap tops but that's about all. With the laundry you might have the complication of a splash back, the splash back might make it hard to get the old top out and could also cause thickness issues with the new top. Our builders want something like $6500 just to do stone in our kitchen. I think we will go ahead with laminate, no get a splashback and remove the benchtop soon as move in then splashback outside too. I think I will shop around and buy my own stone and get a stone mason to install Did you save 40-50% cheaper going elsewhere? Re: Stone benches post handover 7Oct 29, 2013 10:42 am Hey Megz, We haven't gone anywhere as yet - we ended up upgrading the laminate in our bathrooms to the diamond gloss because we found one that matched the cabinet colours we chose so thought that would look quite cool. From the first prices I got it was around $750-900 per slab plus the cuts etc (some did the cutting for free) and seeing how our builder charges in lineal metre for stone this would be way cheaper for us. H1 Thread - viewtopic.php?f=31&t=61557 Re: Stone benches post handover 8Oct 29, 2013 10:52 am Yea sweet. Same same. I will shop around and see how we go I've heard the diamond gloss is quite popular too. Hope you are happy. I have rung a couple of companies and they only install their own stone (meaning you have to purchase through them) .. Surely it's much cheaper than the builders costs Did you look at Caesarstone or Essastone range for stone? Re: Stone benches post handover 9Oct 29, 2013 10:54 am We looked at Essastone seeing how thats what the builder gave us in the kitchen. We have the same cupboards in the bathrooms and kitchen so figured we would do the same benchtops too to keep it uniform (I'm abit anal that way lol). Very happy with our choices the stone is New Byzantine which is abit different and the cabinets are slate grey by polytec in a gloss with stipple smoke or something in the diamond gloss. With the brown bench the cupboards look abit more of a mocha colour but with the grey tiles we choose it works too thank god lol. No way no how would a builder be cheaper than a stone mason! You just need to know where to look!!!! If anyone is after small vanity tops they can be quite expensive as you need to purchase a slab. BUT there is a website that lists all stone masons off cuts and you can get them at a great price. www.offcuts.com.au Cutting Edge Kitchens and Cabinet Making http://cuttingedgekitchens.net.au http://www.facebook.com/pages/Cutting-Edge-Kitchens/290484196676 Mobile : 0419 430 575 PH: 9452 4772 Fax :9452 4772 cuttingedgekitchens@outlook.com Re: Stone benches post handover 11Oct 29, 2013 12:16 pm Yea I want to keep our kitchen and bathroom colours the same too Do you have a blog Sazzy? So have some spare. Don't forget to waterproof the plasterboard again if you have to pull up the tiles. You may as well also install a new undermount sink at the same time, as ripping you may damage the sink trying to separate it from the bench top. You should be able to sell the laminate bench top with a sink on gumtree too. I wouldn't get a plumber to disconnect the waste pipe and taps. Just unscrew the trap and turn off the cockstop before disconnecting the taps (cap it for insurance). You may need a plumber to reconnect the plumbing depending on your level of handymaness (is that even a word? lol). Dear Members I have to decide the Facade column size.
