Here is a picture of my kitchen http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s112/paris-stella/3B7A352F-6C28-4D27-87A5-AFBB69F7E759-6257-00000188E1F1AC9A_zps85b294cd.jpg As you will see the pantry is next to the main fridge. So I actually find it easier to have the toaster etc in the pantry. All my food in the pantry is divided up into baskets. So I have tea/coffee/pods etc in one basket and they are above the kettle and coffee machine. I have another basket for bread etc and that is above the toaster, so it is actually less walking than I would do if all of those items were in the kitchen. The bar fridge is right by the door of the pantry. If you want some pictures of my pantry set up let me know. You need to put your bin under the bench where you will be doing all your prep, and preferably put the bin on the back of the door not in the cupboard. My appliances are stored in the pantry and I use the mixmaster, bread maker, rice cooker and slow cooker in there. The kettle and toaster sit on the bench which contains a small bar sink. Looking at your diagram it could get a bit squashy when the dishwasher door is down and you’re trying to stack it from the sink. You may also need an exhaust fan in your scullery. I would also recommend soft closing drawers, as many as your budget will allow, they are marvellous. Have bulkheads above your kitchen cupboards, they make it look so much better. Probably the jug and breadmaker too. In the main kitchen, there will be a huge island with nothing in it, agency along one wall with cook top at one end and single-bowl (but ample size for prep/pan filling/etc) sink at the other end. The other wall has the fridge and wall ovens/microwave. Essentially, the scullery is only for clean-up - keeping the kitchen free for prep and cooking. I would never want to prep in there! And I'm happy to put off the washing up until guests have gone home or the kids are at school, so it won't be keeping me away from hostess/mum duties. 4 Land settled May '14. Blog: http://jyndeira.net/blog/ Re: What is in you scullery? 31Sep 10, 2013 9:20 am Here are the pictures of my pantry set up. As you will be able to see they are the standard builder shelves, and I have just worked around them to make it work for us. Photo above is when you walk into the pantry on your right hand side. I have a bar fridge and then above this I have a 4 point powerpoint, so I can have coffee machine, toaster and kettle in the pantry. All of my food etc is in baskets. The baskets above the toaster etc house everything needed. So I have one basket that is for tea/coffee/hot chocolate etc and also has the pods for the coffee machine. As it is directly above the only time you have to walk out of the pantry is to get milk and cups. There is another basket and that holds all the bread and rolls, so perfect for the toaster. There are two other baskets on this shelf that have all my cooking oils etc and the other basket holds salt/pepper, gravy, vegeta, things like that. Top shelf is all my flours, rice etc that go in larger containers Front on of the pantry. Again everything divided into baskets. I find that it works for me, as if I am cooking and need sauces or spices (which are in their own basket) I can take the whole basket out and put the whole basket back. To the left of the photo I have more shelving, which holds all of my other applicances - slow cooker, mix master, rice cooker etc. They are all within easy reach and dont have to take up any room in my drawers. Its going to have a double bowl sink and dishwasher, which are located in the end of a 4.5m bench that runs the whole length of the kitchen. 1.6m of benchtop for coffee machine toaster kettle etc, with a microwave spot and open cupboards beneath and some narrow open shelves above. Then the adjoining wall will be all open shelving to store food. The wall adjoining where the sink is, will be blackboard paint for shopping lists etc, and possibly have a wall mounted spice rack or something narrow to make the most of the space. I didn't want full on shelving there as it is the wall that will be visible from the kitchen/lounge/dining. Re: What is in you scullery? 34Sep 12, 2013 11:45 am hey Jen, i am also planning on having a galley kitchen with the fridge to one side adjacent to the scullery entry which is also the WIP and store etc. did you go cupboards or drawers and shelves in the scullery. cheers mark Re: What is in you scullery? 35Sep 12, 2013 12:35 pm dragonchild Essentially, the scullery is only for clean-up - keeping the kitchen free for prep and cooking. I find this recent trend to have the sink/cleaning area hidden rather odd to be honest. It harks back to 80 years ago when the kitchen was away from all the living areas, looks like it's swinging back that way again. I am also a Mum and I spend a LOT of time standing at the sink. Washing dishes, washing kids school lunchboxes etc in afternoon, cleaning trays etc as I cook and bake. I can't delay all cleaning to unsociable hours. We deliberately want it on our kitchen island facing our living areas so I can face either the kids playroom, or they can sit at the island and do homework/talk to me while I'm doing the dishes or cooking. And what about the practicality of carrying dirty dishes into the scullery and then bringing the clean ones out to put away in the kitchen. And if you have the dishwasher in the scullery then you'd be constantly popping in and out to put dirty dishes in there, and unloading would once again be a giant pain. And if you DON'T have the dishwasher in the scullery then it seems weird to have it separate from the main washing sink. Each to their own but quite odd IMO. Our sink won't be too much of an eyesore as it will be undermount and we've got a drainer which can be placed inside or away if entertaining. I agree with you. I love having our kitchen in the living area. The island is the most used space in the house. The kids will sit on the bar stools and do their homework or draw when i am cooking or making lunches etc. I also find that when we entertain people congregate around the kitchen and you are not segregated from anyone. WIP, dishwasher, sink, fr/frz, microwave, coffee, machine and dishes. The only things that are in the kitchen are the ovens, hot plate, a small sink, dishwasher for over flow, two PTY.
This is my kitchen and scullery with a WIP We are also going to be adding a coffee bar into the scullery next to the FR/FRZ Re: What is in you scullery? 38Nov 04, 2013 11:33 am Mine is more or less like 2-Cupcakes. The fridge is in the scullery, but it is in line with the main kitchen bench so the triangle with the prep sink and cooker is still reasonable. This image is a little outdated, since then we added a narrow broom cupboard to the left of the fridge to allow the fridge door to open fully. To the right of the sink in the scullery we have a 900 wide drawer unit where will store our cutlery and main everyday dishes. There is open shelving above the sink for platters, etc. To the right of the fridge is the pantry storage. Edited to add: The "prep" sink is the single one on the island. The one in the scullery is a massive double stainless steel with drainer. I definitely wouldn't want to cook or prep in my scullery, it's just for storage and washing up. We do all the washing up at night usually so there is no need for a window. If I need to wash lunch boxes or something during the day I can use the prep sink if I want. Mainly it is a mess hiding thing, people who are naturally tidy probably wouldn't understand Re: What is in you scullery? 39Nov 04, 2013 11:54 am We have a walk in pantry (it is open - no door) but not in clear eye line from the main kitchen and living areas. In there we (will) have the main fridge, this will be just inside the entry. The microwave (rarely used), the coffee machine and toaster and all other electrical appliances. There is also food (of course, being a pantry). We will store all the entertaining platters, etc in here. We will also keep a second set of cutlery in here, more so just for coffee and breakfast making. The main kitchen has twin sinks (we didn't bother putting this inside the pantry and they are just outside the entry to the pantry), the oven and dishwasher. All the pots and pans, cutlery, and dinnerware will be stored in the kitchen The plan is to use the pantry to make tea and coffee, snacks and breakfast. The main kitchen will be used for all prep and cooking. We have left our island bench free of sinks and ovens to be used as an entertaining and prep area, because the sink is on the back wall of the kitchen we are getting a mirror splash back so you can still see what is happening inside the house. To counteract the annoyance of the main fridge being in the pantry a small 'drinks' fridge will be install under the end of the island bench, meaning you will not have to walk thru the kitchen and pantry to make a drink.
