Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Jul 14, 2013 10:35 am I am in the planning, or more like 'thinking', stage of my extension and have already learn a lot from this forum, but have a question about kitchen design. Who has designed your kitchen? I have a rough idea of what I want but am keen to get someone who knows what they are doing to bring all my ideas together and let me know what works/doesn't work. Would this be the architect? Kitchen designer? Builders design team? Cabinet maker? And then how does it logistically work? If I get a designer in draw it up do I give this to the architect for inclusion in the plans? You may be able to tell I am new at this so would love to here what worked for you and any recommendations. Thanks! M Re: Who designs my kitchen? 2Jul 14, 2013 3:22 pm Best person to design a kitchen is someone who builds them all the time. I have worked for architects and interior designers and they can design some really good looking kitchens that don't function well, I am not saying they are all like that but I have seen some shockers. A kitchen needs to look good but also function well. All kitchen companies and cabinet makers will be able to design the kitchen for you. You need to have a good think about what you want in your kitchen and the materials you want to use to give the designer a head start. The design of your kitchen has no bearing on the structure the architect is drawing, but he might like to have a copy of the design in case something conflicts, ie a window or door that could be moved in the planning stage to make a kitchen design flow better. CEK is right that someone that does it all the time is better than and architect who rarely does one. Mark pages or cut them out of magazines of kitchens that you like the look of to give to the designer. Re: Who designs my kitchen? 5Jul 15, 2013 10:32 pm Also go in to kitchen showrooms. Some things look great on paper but when you actutally open them etc they may not suit you. For example the corner drawers. They look great but need 2 hands to open them and lose a lot of space. It's a good idea to talk to different people at different showrooms because opinions differ about specific things, eg handles, push doors, pantry size, positioning, materials etc. Re: Who designs my kitchen? 6Jul 15, 2013 10:40 pm That's one of the things I am most concerned about- having features that aren't practical that will drive me nuts in years to come.
