Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Jun 20, 2013 1:13 pm Our kitchen needs a new sink, dishwasher, oven and the laminate on some doors is coming off. Whole chunk of laminate has come off pantry door (mdf, I think) and don't think it's fixable. Could use some better storage options inside the corner cabinets. Is 20 yrs old. Any thoughts on fix vs. new kitchen? Layout is fine, but benchtops dated, laminate on doors disintegrating. Not fond of the laminate benchtops, but are OK. Are there some better laminate options out there now? I suspect the kitchen isn't level which will cause problems with stone benchtops, I've read? Currently have a carpenter doing deck work and a few other things, so will ask him about replacing pantry door. Thanks Re: Kitchen newbie 2Jun 20, 2013 9:52 pm If the layout is good and the basic cabinets ok you could do new doors and work tops. Or there is a company called granite transformations that put a stone veneer over laminate benches. You can buy all sorts of fittings for inside the cabinets to make better use of storage. Re: Kitchen newbie 3Jun 20, 2013 11:30 pm Hi, personally I wouldn't spend a great deal on a 20 year old kitchen. If you don't want the cost of a new one and the cabinets are OK just get new doors and a new benchtop. As long as the doors are standard size it shouldn't cost more that$2,000 for all. Depends how big it is of course but shouldn't be more. I definitely would not spend money on a stone benchtop. You could spend only a little more money and get a complete new kitchen with laminate benchtop. If you do the reno then you'd get another 10 years out of it. Depends on your plans for the house. Are you staying 10 years? etc. Re: Kitchen newbie 4Jun 21, 2013 10:44 am Addison001 your smoke alarms should not be in the kitchen but just outside the kitchen door or if you have a kitchen/dining/lounge open plan house then move the alarm to the other side of the dining area.
