Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Jun 01, 2013 9:28 am Hi all,
I'ts a really specific question but has anyone with a BAL 12.5 bushfire rating ever had installed a Schwiegen or similar type external motor rangehood? I can get a really good deal on one at the moment for our build, but am concerned the external mounting of the motor will be a problem. Being only 12.5 it is only 1 step above a 'low' rating but the standard does mention: Per AS 3959-2009 Construction of buildings in bushfire-prone areas 5.6 ROOFS (INCLUDING VERANDA AND ATTACHED CARPORT ROOFS, PENETRATIONS, EAVES, FASCIAS, GABLES, GUTTERS AND DOWNPIPES) 5.6.1 General (a) Roof tiles, roof sheets and roof-covering accessories shall be non-combustible. (c) Roof ventilation openings, such as gable and roof vents, shall be fitted with ember guards made of non-combustible material or a mesh or perforated sheet with a maximum aperture of 2 mm, made of corrosion-resistant steel, bronze or aluminium. 5.6.5 Roof penetrations (a) Roof penetrations, including roof lights, roof ventilators, roof-mounted evaporative cooling units, aerials, vent pipes and supports for solar collectors, shall be adequately sealed at the roof to prevent gaps greater than 3 mm. The material used to seal the penetration shall be non-combustible. I was told the cowl that sits over the motor that is mounted on the roof is made of plastic, but even the Schwiegen rep couldn't say if it would be ok. Would this mean they would have to make some sort of mesh cage up? bushfire 12.5 rating for external motor rangehoods- RESOLVED 2Jun 01, 2013 10:42 pm An update - I ended up just buying it! I figured it was too good a deal to wait for someone else to buy as it was literally 50% off!! . For some reason the store wanted the stock shifted below cost, the sales person even showed me on the computer how much money they lost Ended up with a Schweigen WM2190S 90cm canopy hood and a 1600m3 isodrive motor. As an added bonus, when I unpacked the box I see the 1600 motor has an all metal cowl, the lower spec motors are plastic- I know this as they mistakenly gave us the wrong motors first time. With the design it looks easy to add on some bushfire mesh if this unit isn't up to spec.
