Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 May 16, 2013 9:45 pm Hi All, Wondering if I can get your ideas on our kitchen layout. We have just added in another cupboard and overheads at the fridge area in our kitchen. It has been drafted as the fridge next to the pantry with a 600 wide cupboard a the end IYKWIM. Then the lady at the kitchen place pointed out that when we open the fridge, well the freezer side of it on one of the double ones, that it may hit the pantry door handle???? Mainly because pantry is on angle. Should I move the fridge to end of that section and the cupboard next to pantry? Suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Re: Fridge hitting the pantry- Help 2May 17, 2013 12:47 am I had a virtually identical setup in my last house after we renovated the kitchen - side-by-side fridge beside a corner pantry. It wasn't a problem; yes, the freezer door didn't open to the maximum possible swing because the pantry was there but it was still more than ample to access it and pull out the drawers, do defrosting or whatever. I'll note, however, that we did have a deeper than 600 fridge cavity; it was sized specific to our fridge. Probably a good idea to get the manual for the fridge you want to put there; it should have a diagram showing the dimensions and swing of the doors. Copy that diagram then pencil in where the wall and pantry door will be and see how much it impinges - and how much it would need to move to avoid the problem. HD Land settled May '14. It should be ok as most fridge doors only need to open to about 130 degrees but you have two options. 1. Reverse the fridge hinge side. Most fridges allow this. 2. As you said move the fridge down and put the cabinet in between. Think it swings about 135degrees. But worried about pantry handle sticking out and it crashing into that. I think we have 800 deep there and if where ever they put cupboard it will only be 600 deep so it will sit back a bit. Trying to visualise it. Trying to visualise it. Oh ok. What is 800 deep? The fridge? Is the cabinet section 600mm deep? (not sure what it would be called) Re: Fridge hitting the pantry- Help 8May 17, 2013 2:16 pm Pantry door would swing open into the fridge if I swapped opening direction so I have the same issue, depending on hinge of course. The area there is 800 deep I think. It is bigger than the standard 600 as the cupboard will have a set back. Another thing I'm not sure about as the fridge will look like it sticks out too much either side. Re: Fridge hitting the pantry- Help 9May 17, 2013 2:34 pm Your plans show the fridge section deeper than the bench tops so I would assume its 800mm deep. How deep is your fridge????? Normally a fridge has to protrude the thickness of the fridge door to allow it to open properly. Make sure you take this into account. We want a Side by side all in one and I think the ones we have looked at are around 800. I realise I need some door swing. Re: Fridge hitting the pantry- Help 11May 18, 2013 9:49 am Is that spare wall to the left of your cupboards? If so why not put the fridge there, then you can have more space for drawers/cupboards where the fridge was meant to be. Regards, Grumbles Re: Fridge hitting the pantry- Help 12May 18, 2013 9:58 am It is, but it is outside the bulkhead and may look a bit outside the room IYKWIM Re: Fridge hitting the pantry- Help 13May 18, 2013 9:58 am Id move fridge to the left and then add cabinets or drawers between pantry and fridge space. Make nib wall between fridge and cabinets 600mm to suit bench width. I would make this your 'coffee zone'. So keep your kettle, coffee machine etc there. Add a full length (slim) wine rack between pantry and fridge space. From the little I can see, it looks like there's enough space on the end to do this? 2. Split pantry doors to open inwards (may not work depending on your internal shelving) http://st.houzz.com/fimgs/1fd165610c127 ... itchen.jpg 3.
