We had an Ikea kitchen all ready to go and then looked at the Master's one and much prefered them! Ikea are a PITA to deal with and Master's customer service has been amazing! Also I have to disagree, Ikea are really expensive for installs. $80 per cabinet before they even put doors, handles etc on. Our kitchen was going to cost $3000 to install without the splashback or bench top!!! Re: DIY Ikea kitchen after handover or builder to do kitchen 8May 08, 2013 10:14 pm CEK is right. I know people that have put in Ikea kitchens properly and they last easily for 10+ years but it really needs to be screwed together right. This person was extremely handy and very capable. Also if the credit is so small I doubt the saving is worth it... Look else where to save. i.e. exposed agg versus paving will save heaps as and example. Vinyl versus tiles or laminex versus stone etc, while these are compromises it still lets the overall picture get delivered in a cost efficient manner. I think kitchens could be a rabbit hole of false economy if not careful... good luck..... scrub your budget Re: DIY Ikea kitchen after handover or builder to do kitchen 10May 09, 2013 4:17 pm Mitchandamy Also I have to disagree, Ikea are really expensive for installs. $80 per cabinet before they even put doors, handles etc on. Our kitchen was going to cost $3000 to install without the splashback or bench top!!! Hmm, I might be wrong then. All I know is that they have their display kitchens listed as "total $5000 including install" for example, and it seemed that the install must have been very reasonable. But maybe the kitchens are even cheaper than I expected then (and the install drives the cost up). Either way, the full price (kitchen + install) is very reasonably priced in my opinion. Haven't looked at other places like Masters, but I wouldn't be surprised if they have good kitchens as well. Re: DIY Ikea kitchen after handover or builder to do kitchen 11May 09, 2013 6:31 pm They catch you out with the number of cabinets for that price and all the little extras! Very hard to do a kitchen for a total of 5k! I was wondering if it was possible to just get the cheapest standard kitchen PD offers and then changing the doors since according to a mate of mines husband who installs kitchens all the base cupboards unless they are custom built wood ones are pretty much the same its the doors and fittings that make each different. I wouldn't agree with that. There are really cheap and nasty Chinese flat pack cabinets, there are Ikea flat pack cabinets then there are flat pack cabinets made in Australia. They all use different quality boards and hardware. Not all flat pack cabinets are the same height either. Remember that IKEA only do their standard sizes - if you have even one cabinet that doesn't match the IKEA sizes, you are stuck. Also, the standard builder cabinets may or may not have holes in the right place for the IKEA hinges. My kitchen should theoretically be able to be standard sizes - it's just one row of cabinets against a wall plus an island. Yeah, right. The island is ok; 800+800+600DW+400. The ones against the wall? The tall pantry at one end is 20 short of a standard width, the low cupboards on either size of the oven are 710 and 705, the high cupboards on either side of the rangehood are around 600 but there is 53 difference and neither matches a standard width of any description. We haven't made it to tender yet so I might buy a few of the cheaper ikea doors for sizing and take them to a display and have a look. Thanks for the advice. Decorate your home. If it was up to me id have a custom kitchen built by a Carpenter. If I can arrange it my plan after handover is to sell the kitchen as new on ebay and have someone come in and redo it to my dream kitchen shaker style with moldings and curves. This ikea plan is secondary. Decorate your home. It gives the illusion that your life is more interesting than it really is. This ikea plan is secondary. How do you know they are the same?? The Ikea stuff is produced in Sweden, CZechoslavia or Germany then you have Chinese flat packs and Australian flat packs. They will all vary slightly in height. Width should be fine but height might be your problem. The other issue could be the position of the holes in the doors for hinges. If they are even 1mm off you will have problems. Remember that the standard height of a kitchen used to be 900, it has now moved to 910-920mm so you have 3 possible cabinet heights. I totally agree a custom made kitchen is so much better. I personally would go to Ikea and measure up a number of doors taking not as to where the hinges are drilled as well and then compare to the kitchen you have installed. No need to buy until you know for sure. Have a look at the specs on this cabinet from Ikea http://www.ikea.com/au/en/catalog/products/S79882107/ Overall height 860 Frame height 700 This means a 700mm high door with a 160mm high kickboard and only a bench height of 893 with a laminated top. In Australia most kitchens are installed with a 130-150mm high kickboard and a 900-920mm bench top. This makes the cabinet and doors higher than 700mm. I could be wrong but I am just saying be care full and don't be surprised if they don't fit. I am a cabinet maker that uses this stuff every day. It may look the same but trust me when I say there are huge differences between melamine products that look the same! I am yet to see a kitchen installed in Australia that wasn't from Ikea that had only 700high doors! That is very low. The minimum height of my doors is 740mm!!!
