Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Apr 29, 2013 5:56 pm Hi all, We're looking at quite a substantial kitchen in our next build - complete with walk in pantry and scullery, but now we're trying to think about what useful things to fill up all that space with! So far on the list to include we have: Fridge recess with plumbing cupboard above fridge dishwasher recess with power and plumbing under bench 900mm oven 900mm gas cooktop hidden rangehood over top 60cm wall oven in scullery with microwave recess above and shelf above that for all my cookbooks bin drawer (preferably with rubbish/recycling/compost compartments pot drawers extra bank of drawers in scullery what do we need to add? I just love the sound of your kitchen!! Have you looked into steam ovens? I had never seen them until I went to a conference in Melbourne last year. Make sure overheads go to the ceiling or have bulkhead above? Check the fridge you want so the fridge recess is big enough. I made ours 1m thinking it would be big enough and the one i have found is 1m wide and needs 5mm either side!! I have a friend who put in a microwave type recess in the overhead cupboards and he uses it to put his netbook there when cooking to follow the recipe. I'm hoping to put in a shelf to put the cookbook or iPad on Re: What do you wish your kitchen had? 4Apr 29, 2013 6:09 pm Utensil drawer under the cooktop Steam oven Plate warmer ----------------------------------------------- http://pab34newdigs.blogspot.com.au/ ----------------------------------------------- Re: What do you wish your kitchen had? 5Apr 29, 2013 6:40 pm PAB_34 A michelin star chef.....but I didn't see it on the options list my husband seems to think he's that - I'm sure he's agreeing to this kitchen lark because he wants to apply for MKR! fmac You could get the microwave build in? Will look into, I've never investigated it before - what happens if it goes kaput though, can you get at them? fmac I just love the sound of your kitchen!! Have you looked into steam ovens? I had never seen them until I went to a conference in Melbourne last year. Have never looked into them either! Definitely not for my 60cm one though, I bake french macarons and spend half the time cooking them with the wooden spoon keeping the door ajar letting the steam out! fmac Make sure overheads go to the ceiling or have bulkhead above? Definitely We're having the ceiling lowered to 28c in the kitchen and want them to go right up to it. fmac Check the fridge you want so the fridge recess is big enough. I made ours 1m thinking it would be big enough and the one i have found is 1m wide and needs 5mm either side!! We've been through this! When we built this place I realised after the cabinets had been installed it'd be touch and go.... the recess was wide enough (read the exact same width) but the bench overhang meant we had our fridge sitting in the middle of the kitchen for 6 months until I got a man to shave the edge of the bench off. It took 2 men to shove the fridge back into the gap - no idea how we're going to pry it out again! We also didn't put plumbing in so the ice and water feature of our fridge has never been used fmac I have a friend who put in a microwave type recess in the overhead cupboards and he uses it to put his netbook there when cooking to follow the recipe. I'm hoping to put in a shelf to put the cookbook or iPad on great idea! I've seen some gadgets for holding ipads in the kitchen, but yeah for the cookbooks too! The good steam ovens also work as a standard oven I loved the ones I saw they also had digital displays so you could set the temperature to the degree! You may find if you want something specific with the ovens it might be easier to buy your own to be installed after handover. My understanding is it can be quite expensive to upgrade through builders! Re: What do you wish your kitchen had? 7Apr 29, 2013 10:39 pm Drawers for everything! They are awesome. Expensive but worth it. Apart from my bin drawer, my favourite thing in my old kitchen was our spice drawer and pull out oil rack. Everything was rig near the cooktop and therefore got put away after cooking. My hubby does the cooking and he is forever taking things out of the pantry and leaving them on the bench I also loved no handles. So easy to clean Recently moved to a 60's home in need of some improvement! http://s797.photobucket.com/user/leenii ... ch%20House Old house: http://s797.photobucket.com/albums/yy25 ... loo/House/ Re: What do you wish your kitchen had? 8Apr 29, 2013 11:10 pm I also had a fairly big kitchen and pantry to fill and these are some of the things I would recommend. When you decide on your appliances find the manual on the net and print out copies of the dimensions for the kitchen builders. Have drawers everywhere. (I have 28 in the kitchen/pantry and 3 in the laundry). Where you are storing the cutlery have four drawers but make all the others three high, if you only have two you are wasting too much space. If you are having a microwave above a stove make sure the bottom of the stove is below bench height so you can comfortably access the microwave. Buy a trim kit for your microwave. Install a steamer oven-my saucepans are almost redundant. Put bin on the back of the door and if possible have a drawer under the bin to hold liners, bags etc. In the pantry have 300mm shelves for most containers and 450mm shelves for appliances. Put in some slots for cutting boards, muffin pans, baking trays etc. Have utensil drawers both sides of the cooktop with adjustable cutlery trays. Put detergent rack under sink. Regards, Grumbles Re: What do you wish your kitchen had? 9Apr 29, 2013 11:12 pm PAB_34 A michelin star chef.....but I didn't see it on the options list I'm so close to having one of these...not Michelin rated, but he's worked in some of Gourmet Traveller's fave restaurants on the Sunshine Coast! Pity he now works away half the time...during that time, it's me and some Maggi chicken noodles! Back to the topic at hand... have a look into a Zip Hydrotap! Favourite thing in our whole house! Agree with the drawers, so handy. Check the sizing though - a lot of my larger glasses won't fit in the glass drawer, so they've had to go in the overheads. LED strip lighting under overheads, or just lighting there in general. That's all I can think of for now! 1st build: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=59376 *New*-2nd build: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=70324&p=1154282#p1154282 Re: What do you wish your kitchen had? 10Apr 30, 2013 10:16 am what is important to me are 1. DRAWERS, only drawers. 2. The cabinet height should be suitable to YOUR height. In my case, my base unit carcases will be 780mm hight, benchtop 40mm, legs about 90mm. With 780 height, my drawers will be 1-1-2-2, 1 means 130mm high, 2 means 260mm high. Higher than that is hardly needed and only a waste of space. 3. Waste bin UNDER the benchtop where you work and not under the sink. 4. Oven NOT under the cooker, higher up that you can see what is happening. 5. Microwave not too high or too low. 6. A very large sink, 550mm wide that large trays fit in. 5. Dishwasher not under bench but about 400mm higher built in cabinet. How many times a day do you bend down to fill and empty? 6. Kitchen mixer with pullout and spray option. That's about my wishlist. Re: What do you wish your kitchen had? 11Apr 30, 2013 11:01 am Evelin what is important to me are 1. DRAWERS, only drawers. 5. Put in a pair of F&P single dishdrawers (tall version) either side of the sink. I am not a fan of dishdrawers. I find the internal space is very limited with a big family. Each drawer has a seperate motor so you actually end up with less space. I also dont like the plastic internals. Put in a pair of F&P single dishdrawers (tall version) either side of the sink. I've lived in 3 rental places with F&P dish drawers - the first one was a brand new single one. It died The second one was a brand new double one. The top drawer died. A few months later the bottom drawer died. And you couldn't shut the top one so that was effectively dead too. The 3rd place had a brand new double one - guess what - it died. I've had a Westinghouse (bought brand new) regular dishwasher in my current house for a couple of years and never had a problem with it! A friend told me once F&P dish drawers were designed by a dishwasher repair man to keep him in business Our Custom Dale Alcock build in the Village at Wellard https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=78620 Re: What do you wish your kitchen had? 15Apr 30, 2013 7:19 pm grumblebum54 I also had a fairly big kitchen and pantry to fill and these are some of the things I would recommend. Definitely going to look into that extra sized sink for the scullery where all the handwashing of trays etc will take place Our Custom Dale Alcock build in the Village at Wellard https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=78620 Re: What do you wish your kitchen had? 16Apr 30, 2013 7:27 pm love the idea of number 6 a bigger sink so glad went with a butlers sink love it Re: What do you wish your kitchen had? 18May 01, 2013 10:35 am I will get a high drawer, about 500mm high, at the bottom of a tall cabinet next to the oven just for trays, pizza stones and the like. Internally it will have about 3 dividers across the width of the drawer to separate the trays. For this drawer I will have a standard Blum Tandembox http://m1.blum.com/file-storage/img/con ... x_plus.jpg. The higher rails with dividers across can hold the trays in place. Otherwise I will have Blum Intivo http://m3.blum.com/file-storage/img/sli ... ntivo3.jpg because I like the look of it. Hettich has similar drawers but they are not as good looking and don't work as well. Re: What do you wish your kitchen had? 19May 01, 2013 2:00 pm Most of my must haves are listed already, but most important to me is Extensive pot drawers No handles Soft close drawers and overheads Massive under mount sink with pull out spray Not having the standard 4 drawers, cutlery will go in wide set of 3 drawers. I find those small drawers useless for a big family Plenty of lighting, including downlights under overheads Set of wire drawers in pantry for onions, potatoes etc Lots and lots of power points Oh, one of my fiends has a huge kitchen, she has included fridge drawers and they are amazing!
