Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Mar 20, 2013 11:15 pm http://img829.imageshack.us/img829/1452/kitchenz.png - very basic pic of my situation Ive got a dilemna that needs help asap because i have to let my stone mason and cabinet maker know by tomorrow!!! Help would be hugely appreciated. Basically, ive got the kitchen cupboards installed, and weve now noticed that theres going to be only a 700mm gap inbetween the front of the fridge door and the edge of the bench. Its only a small kitchen and we followed the exact shape of the old kitchen cabinets, but we are really worried about this gap. Im in two minds, to get the cabinet maker to shorten it will cost roughly $1k, (shorten by roughly 150mm), and im worried that basically thats our main prep area, standing in the corner of the bench, as there is minimal bench space below the sink, then a hot plate, not big enough for prep area. So, Pros are obvious, more space between fridge and bench, wont look squished, etc etc. Cons are that it costs $1k and money is real tight, getting married in 3 weeks =/, and that i lose more bench space than i planned. Does any one have a similar gap or should i suck it up and change it because i will regret it. Thanks for your help Re: Space between front of fridge and benchtop 2Mar 21, 2013 7:05 am Live with it for a few months. Get you wedding done and dont stress. If in a few months of using the kitchen you still dont like the space then it can still be cut down. Money is always the curse, but i do wonder if 1000k is reasonable for what is 10 minutes work in the workshop for knocking up a new carcase and shaving some stone. Re: Space between front of fridge and benchtop 4Mar 21, 2013 7:48 am Basically hes got to come to our house and dismantle a fair chunk of the carcass, take it to his workshop, cut it down, reinstall, and needs to buy a whole new sheet of melamine to just replace one door as he has no material left to do so... hes my fiances family friend so he isnt doing wrong by us... if your worried about 800mm and im going to be getting 700mm at the only entrance into my kitchen, possibly even around 670-680mm... yeah definitely starting to feel concerned ! Wont it be to hard to change once its all installed? The stone mason will have to take that piece back to his workshop to cut and re-do the edging. mmmmm my brain hurts Re: Space between front of fridge and benchtop 6Mar 21, 2013 8:16 am yeah ive already sussed that out, fridge doors need to come off !! :/ then its fine tho ! Re: Space between front of fridge and benchtop 7Mar 21, 2013 11:10 am sceen7 Money is always the curse, but i do wonder if 1000k is reasonable for what is 10 minutes work in the workshop for knocking up a new carcase and shaving some stone. Clearly you are not a cabinet maker!!! To buy a standard cabinet without fitting is around $250-400 depending on the size. You need new doors or drawers, possibly a new back panel. A full sheet of melamine for 1 door is not cheap. You cant simply shave down the stone!! The edge has to be fully polished. This is extra work for the stone mason. $1000 is on the money to do this sort of work! A standard doorway is 780mm so the opening is only 80mm less than this. While I do agree its a bit narrow I wouldnt be making any snap decisions to spend $1000 in cutting it down! I personally would live with it for a couple of weeks before handing over my hard earned! If he didnt I would expect that he redo the carcase at cost, maybe the stone expenses are a little harder to absorb. On reflection I reckon you are better of trying to get it right now.... I'll bet if its left it will be there for years bugging the hell out of you and the new wife. Re: Space between front of fridge and benchtop 9Mar 21, 2013 9:51 pm ahha yeah ummm its actually really easy with the stone mason, hes only just cut the pieces for my kitchen, and hes my fiance's dads best mate so he wasnt going to charge us or anything to re-cut and redo the edge.. cost was in the cabinet maker, but its all too late now anyway, benchtops are all done and polished and nearly going in! haha im so nervous, i will let you know how it all goes, thanks for your input guys, Ill be sure to post up some pictures of my nice new kitchen with a generous 700mm entry :D haha Re: Space between front of fridge and benchtop 10Mar 22, 2013 6:03 am Might be impossible - but have you looked at kitchen and tried a different set-up/plan. Maybe slide cupboards/bench along a wall and put fridge at other end etc. Might be impossible I know. I mean by this a simple re-do. You have all the pieces - but maybe they can be re-arranged ? It might cost a little but could save a lot ? Re: Space between front of fridge and benchtop 11Mar 22, 2013 7:21 am yeah we looked at all possible arrangements, the cupboards are where they are to basically follow the shape of the old kitchen because i found it hard to match my kitchen tiles perfectly so patching any required gaps was not really possible 2 7523 Joe Apologies for the delay in getting back to you.
