Melamine doors (I assume that's what you mean) are typically 16 or 18 mm. there is a difference between laminated and melamine doors. I think, laminated is better quality than melamine. i noticed some companies quoted 16mm doors which I def don't want. Is Laminex, Formica doing 18 or 19mm doors or who is? Thanks. Re: Thickness of laminated doors 4Mar 15, 2013 6:43 pm Yes there is a difference between laminate and melamine. This is discussed in another thread by CEK. Laminate is a 1mm sheet of (let's call it) plastic, that is then glued on to a substrate. Unless it is postformed as in benchtops you will have a square edge that shows the base colour on corners. It is very expensive to do a kitchen with laminated doors and would not give you as neat a finish as a melamine door with abs edging. It is hardly ever use in a domestic situation. Melamine on the other hand is a very thin colour coating applied to the face of a substrate during manufacture. The boards are then cut and edging applied. It is very neat and durable. Many people seem to get the two mixed up. Laminex is a brand name, their melamine doors are normally 18 mm while Formica (also a Laminex product) doors are usually 16mm. There are loads of different manufactures of melamine sheet so it will often depend on what board you choose. I have in my 17 years old kitchen Laminex doors with Laminex edging, same as the doors, square. The sample says Laminex cactus 331, texture finish (which i have0, the other side 'dimensions finish'. This material is brilliant. Is this now Melamine? The sample is double as thick as the benchtop sample by Wilsonart. What material is the Wilsonart? I just read Contour Finedge doors are Lamiwood. I this a better product than laminex doors? i just don't get it. Thanks Re: Thickness of laminated doors 6Mar 16, 2013 12:17 am Hi Evelin. The sample chip you have is laminate made by Laminex. The sample chips are used so people can pick from small pieces. They show the different colours and finish available in the same colour such as texture, velour, dimensions, etc. Those colour chips then come in melamine boards that are used to make vertical surfaces (doors and panels) or laminates that are used to make horizontal surfaces (bench tops). The doors you have will be made of laminex cactus melamine board with matching edging. 17 years ago they probably used melamine edging. Nowadays we use abs edging that is even stronger than the old melamine edging. "Contour finedge doors" are made by laminex using melamine board that is routed unti it is very thin and is then rolled until it comes around to meet itself. The top and bottom edge have abs edging. They are available in 3mm and 7mm radius. Laminex also make square edge doors (melamine with abs edging) The reason your colour chip is thicker than the Wilsonart laminate is most likely that the Wilsonart laminate can be postformed. That is the technique where thin laminates are heated and then rolled around edges of benches. Some laminates can be rolled very tightly such as laminex "squareform" benchtops. I hope that has cleared things up a bit. Probably just confused you.
