Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Mar 01, 2013 6:35 pm I would like to have 2 x 900 cabinets on the right side of the island (facing living room), on the left side 2 x 1100 (past the pillar). That will leave me with a gap of 80cm between island and induction cooktop. The drawers under the cooktop will be 1200 wide. Is that too narrow? The space between the island and the tall cabinets on the left is 130cm. I have the same space between my fridge and the island but I would hate to have that limited space with the cooktop Re: Enough space between island and cooktop? 4Mar 01, 2013 6:57 pm Its the end of the island though. Its not like people are going to be standing at the end of the island unit while you are using the cooktop. 800mm is a little on the narrow side. If you could get it to 900 I think it would be ok Cutting Edge Kitchens and Cabinet Making http://cuttingedgekitchens.net.au http://www.facebook.com/pages/Cutting-Edge-Kitchens/290484196676 Mobile : 0419 430 575 PH: 9452 4772 Fax :9452 4772 cuttingedgekitchens@outlook.com Re: Enough space between island and cooktop? 5Mar 01, 2013 7:17 pm thanks for the responses. I thought so it would be a bit too tight. The cooktop isn't really the issue for me personally, it is more to access the pot drawers underneath. pity. I wanted to have the cabinets the same width on each side, just a visual thing. Never mind, one side will then have 800+900, the other 1200 and 900. At the moment the kitchen is a U, with 2 stupid corner cabinets, plus to get outside, we have to walk around the pillar. The patio doors are right from the cooktop. There is only my husband and myself. I will try tomorrow at a kitchen place, how much space I need to use the drawers under the cooktop. It is not so that I would access them 5 times a day, only pots and pans plus the narrow drawer under the cooktop which is not a problem. Thanks again. Your drawers under the cooktop when open will project out 500mm. With a 900mm space this would leave 400mm. I have put island units in small units with 900mm spaces and the customers love it. Its a bit tight on the full length of an island but its only on the end of yours so I dont see a problem. At the moment I have 1550mm between the two legs of the "U", which looks nice but is a bit too far to be practical. However, I can imagine it makes sense when more than two people use the kitchen. Re: Enough space between island and cooktop? 8Mar 02, 2013 10:22 am We only have 900 between our cooktop and island. It's too narrow. DH and I can't cook together in there. But ours is different layout to yours. It's the more common stove/oven/fridge along back wall and island with sink infront Re: Enough space between island and cooktop? 9Mar 02, 2013 1:22 pm LeanneR We only have 900 between our cooktop and island. Re: Enough space between island and cooktop? 10May 23, 2013 8:10 pm If one person is there cooking, it will be difficult for another passing. Add in kids, elbows stiring pots etc.. I'd go for 1200mm if you have the space. Re: Enough space between island and cooktop? 11May 27, 2013 7:14 am I think it 900 is really too narrow to be functional, and it may look out of proportion given the otherwise pretty spacious footprint of your kitchen. I also suspect the short end of the island could end up being the major prep area for the cooktop, so you want to give yourself the room to make that possible, 1050 to 1200mm. Have you thought about putting drawers across that end to increase it's utility as a prep zone? And if someone does visit with you in the kitchen, where will they sit? Perhaps putting 1200 drawers across the end facing the cooktop, then an overhang of 900-1200mm plus a narrow bank of drawers facing the living room would suit. You would still have room for two banks of 900mm drawers on the side facing what I think are your ovens. It would really maximize the drawer space. The carcase is 780cm high. From the left, next to the pantry (box in grey), follows 1 x 60cm tall cabinet with 4 internal pullouts and 1 high drawer at the bottom for large trays, pizza stone etc 1 x 60cm tall cabinet with micro behind lift door, oven, 2 drawers at the bottom 1 x 100cm for induction cooktop, 3 equal high drawers, top drawer has an internal drawer 1 x 65c, blind corner 1 x 40cm, 2 drawers, one internal drawer in top drawer 1 x 60cm sink cabinet (sink is rectangular not round) 1 x 60cm dishwasher 1 x 40cm, 2 drawers, top drawer for bin, bottom drawer for drink bottles 1 x fridge Next to the fridge is the sliding door to the garden. The whole room is actually 8m long and about 6m wide. Island, facing kitchen 2 x 100cm, 2 equal high drawers (130cm each) + 2 equal high drawers (260cm each) Island facing living room 2 x 850cm, 3 equal high drawers Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Thanks to all for your comments and suggestions. 2 7540 Most of the time, council will push you out to a private certifier as it ties up their limited resources.
