Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Feb 20, 2013 1:09 am Hi We are just at the beginning of our first house and land experience but there is one thing I know that our house will have, A Dish-Draining Closet!! The biggest changes we have done on the base floor plan, are in the kitchen. The sink will face the wall, not the kitchen island as many kitchen plans seem to have. Personally I like to use the whole kitchen island benchtop for preparing food and using it for eating as well - so I find the sink is on the way. The cupboard will be places over the sink so the water will drip into the sink. Nowadays, they also provide driptrays under the shelf if you want.. According to the inventor's calculations in 1940s, the average housewife spent almost 30,000 hours of her life washing and drying dishes, so this saves a lot of time - just put the dishes in the cupboard and they'll dry itself - the best, away from your eyes! Just need to wait until Australian retailers start selling these. The closest thing I have found is in Ikea, but we need to wait for our relatives to visit us and bring few cheap shelves next time Check these for more information http://www.lifehacker.com.au/2011/09/ha ... ng-closet/ http://www.skimbacolifestyle.com/2009/0 ... ducts.html Re: The ONE must have in my kitchen.. have you got one? 2Feb 20, 2013 3:41 am interesting idea first time i have heard of one. Re: The ONE must have in my kitchen.. have you got one? 3Feb 20, 2013 9:29 am My dishes just drip dry in the normal dish rack anyways - MrsT Brought first house in 2008. Renovated...a LOT. Built in 2013. Our thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=67954 Re: The ONE must have in my kitchen.. have you got one? 4Feb 20, 2013 10:21 am MrsT12 My dishes just drip dry in the normal dish rack anyways Hi! I know you might think this is nothing "exceptional" but I just like the fact of "not seeing the dishes" instead of them piling up next to the sink because I hate putting them back to where they belong I usually just leave the dishes in the cupboard and take them out when I need - saving the possible hassle from putting the dishes away from external racks etc.. But obviously we are going to have a dishwasher so this will be used from some dishes.. Happy domestic chores!! Re: The ONE must have in my kitchen.. have you got one? 5Feb 20, 2013 3:14 pm Looks inconvenient to be honest. Putting plates and pots and pans in overhead cupboards. We'll keep using the dishwasher as our draining cupboard and then put the dishes back in their easy to reach drawers. Maybe in small European kitchens things like that are more necessary in order to keep the benches clear. Don't know if it's really needed in our larger kitchens. On a side point, a decent cabinet maker should be able to custom make you these cupboards if you really want them. Spend the extra couple minutes putting dry dishes away. Or Bette yet a scullery can hide all your dishes & sink haha Re: The ONE must have in my kitchen.. have you got one? 7Feb 20, 2013 3:39 pm I'd rather a dishwasher... We only really wash up large pots and trays by hand. Most of it gos in the dishwasher. Well the mechanical kind anyway. We don't. Not that I haven't tried to convince DH otherwise. re: the dish drainers I gather they are popular in many countries. I like the first pic but not the 2nd. Would I have one. Nope. Re: The ONE must have in my kitchen.. have you got one? 11Feb 20, 2013 6:07 pm Thanks everyone for your comments. Yes we wash most of our dishes in the dishwasher like most of you. I guess this is one of those things how people have grown up and therefore I find it practical. Those drip trays next to sink were new thing for me 6 years ago and I still don't like them .. For small kitchen / house the cupboard can be practical but yes technology and dishwasher do most of the jobs now. Just thought introducing of anyone has seen it be and your thoughts Re: The ONE must have in my kitchen.. have you got one? 12Mar 02, 2013 3:34 pm Never seen that before, I assume you would make sure these cupboards are well ventialated so no mould or spores build up in the nice warm, moist space it looks like it would create. Re: The ONE must have in my kitchen.. have you got one? 13Mar 03, 2013 4:47 pm Personally, i'd hate it. Waste of cupboard space. Imagine putting a wet plate up there and the water dripping down your arm into your shirt lol. Being short I probably wouldn't even be able to reach anywhere past the front of the cupboard anyway. Re: The ONE must have in my kitchen.. have you got one? 14Mar 03, 2013 9:09 pm In your first picture the cupboard has a wooden bottom, won’t it rot? Like Echo I don’t think I could reach the second shelf and forget the top shelf. The OP mentions they were invented in the 1940’s so if they haven’t caught on here by now I don’t think they’ll be a goer! If it is something you have grown up with and you like it by all means put it in your kitchen. Regards, Grumbles Re: The ONE must have in my kitchen.. have you got one? 15Mar 04, 2013 9:05 am Never seen these before. Can't see how you could get all the dishes you wash into one cupboard. We have 22 drawers in our kitchen we could use dishes from any one of them, how do you cionfine the dishes you use to just this one cupboard or do you rotate dishes around to different locations. Also wouldn't the water dripping down be an annoyance. Can understand why this has not taken off here. Re: The ONE must have in my kitchen.. have you got one? 16Mar 05, 2013 9:56 am Doing it in stainless and directly over a sink or drainer would be a lot better. http://i1212.photobucket.com/albums/cc455/stewiesno1/hidden-kitchen-storage-08_zps0a933514.jpg Older style... http://i1212.photobucket.com/albums/cc455/stewiesno1/dryingrack2he7_zpse14a6464.jpg Stewie Thanks mate.
