Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Feb 16, 2013 3:42 pm Hi, I'm looking into building the house I have attached the plans for. The only thing I don't like is the kitchen. I'm a bit worried that there is not enough bench space. Does anyone have any ideas to make it bigger? Would it look funny closing in the side closest to the family room? Any thoughts? Thanks in advance. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: ideas to make kitchen layout different 2Feb 16, 2013 10:50 pm I reakon it would look fine to close off the Kitchen. If youre like us and currently use a dreadfull old kitchen from the 1980's you may actually be suprised by the ammount of bench space in your new home. When my wife realised the dimensions of the new Kitchen we are building she descibed the benchspace as "Massive" In other words is your benchspace limited or are you merely worried you "wont have enough". Get a tape measure and actually compare your new Kitchen to your existing one (thats what we did) I Like the Alfresco in that design, looks really fresh having that as a feature in the middle of your living area(nice plants/lit-up at night) Saving money on quality stuff done right firstime Our Build Thread https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=66810&p=1094349#p1094349 Re: ideas to make kitchen layout different 3Feb 17, 2013 7:00 am see if you can find another kitchen you lke from the same builder and do a cut and paste and if you like it ask them to change. our house has bits from other designs and has worked well. i do not know if this could happen but pushing out the wall of the meals area so it is the same as the ensuite end wall and swapping the meals for the kitchen so you have a view straight to the alfresco . this would also mean extending theatre and alfresco. put i find doing a cut and paste will help alot , Re: ideas to make kitchen layout different 4Feb 17, 2013 11:32 am if you have a bench in the pantry too, you will porbably have enough. I have about the same as you, but hob and sink on back wall (window in front of sink) and breakfast bar is not cluttered with a sink etc its clear i have a bench in the pantry and if i didnt have that, i wouldnt have enough bench. I use my food processor in there (I can grab ingredients without dragging it all out, just lift the processor from on the shelf below the bench..too easy. no excuse to not have choc cake within 25 mins, or 5 mins with cake in a cup!) and my toaster is there always plugged in, fruit bowl, pens, phone, soda stream having a walk in pantry WITH BENCH frees up a lot of bench in the actual kitchen Re: ideas to make kitchen layout different 6Feb 17, 2013 3:33 pm If your pantry is at least 600 mm deep, you will be able to fit in A bench , with 4 or 5 shelves above said bench , and below have two shelves 600 deep with say 3 dividers for cookbooks, chopping boards, or large platters/ food processor/ appliances etc bag potatoes/ veg etc. Or Tupperware but I like mine in 2 pot drawers. Re: ideas to make kitchen layout different 7Feb 18, 2013 11:49 am Personally I wouldn't close in the family room end, as it will drive you crazy walking around the bench all the time. Have you considered extending your pantry into the little groove in the garage, meaning you could move you fridge into what is now the garage, put the entry door next to the fridge (coming into the pantry), and giving yourself that extra bit of space where your fridge now stands. Also looking at your pantry, it appears that you may already have a bench in there, which will help a lot with space saving. Another idea is to move the coat cupboard and extend your pantry there, you could always put your coat cupboard into your WIR - if you feel that the double wallrobe and WIR will still be big enough Re: ideas to make kitchen layout different 8Mar 02, 2013 11:03 am The only problem with the sink in the island is that it is in the middle of the bench and makes it hard to utilize the space properly. The sink divides the bench into 2 small sections and also the sink is generally the messiest area in the kitchen with dirty dishes and cups. The other issue is power its hard to get power to islands and most builders wont do it, so all the electrical will be on cooktop side. If you enclose the end and make the benchtop a 'U' shape and also move the sink to the enclosed area it will open up the full length of the breakfast bar island area. The closed in end can be done using a nib wall about 1150mm high so the sink will be behind a short wall to hide all the mess and you can place a small servery bench on top of nib wall for serving dishes or just for nick nacks You never have a fridge against wall as you’ve drawn. The doors can’t open past 90 degrees and it’s difficult and maybe impossible to remove drawers 2 15609 Hi, We're building a double-storey in Perth and I'm undecided with the kitchen sink situation.
