Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Feb 05, 2013 4:53 pm I have noticed alot of people are refering to the material being used for there doors as laminate. In most cases it is not laminate that is being used! Laminate is a product that is around 1mm thick. It is purchased in large sheets and then cut and glued to many different substrates. Alot of doctors surgerys have fully laminated doors but it is vary rare that a kitchen is fully laminated. Laminate doors also have laminate edges that can chip very easily. There is also alot of labour to laminate a door. The product that most people are talking about is Lamiwood(in laminexs range. there are also different names for it by other suppliers) It is a 16-18mm thick MDF sheet with a prefinished melamine coating on both sides. This coating less than 1/4mm thick. The edges applied to this material are 1-2mm PVC/ABS edging. Yep! Its also good for people to know exactly what they are buying! What product is that? Is that Lamiwood? What product is that? Is that Lamiwood? It is very similar to the old Lamiwoods in that it comes in 16-18mm thick large prefinished sheets but has the new crystalgloss finish on the surface. It has ABS edges glue to it after beign cut. Its not a proper laminate. Thats a good thing though! I would never have fully laminated doors in my kitchen. They chip far to easily. The melamine door with ABS edge is so much better! Is there a thread with photos (close ups would be good) of these cabinets and edges? I know with the abs edges you can see a line. Would be good to see some installed examples Re: Its not laminate 12Feb 10, 2013 7:40 am I'm fairly sure with the crystalgloss finish they put some sort of sealer on there so you don't see the line?? Here is a pic I took (although a bad one) of the edge of a crystalgloss kitchen. NOTE: due to reflection the corner looks a different colour in this photo but its not like that in real life.
