Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Jan 11, 2013 3:34 am Hi just wondering...doing a kitchen renovation. We opted to move sink near window instead of island bench. Our thinking was to have a clear bench top which is less clutter and I do not like the idea of splatter when washing dishes. I have now looked at display homes and magazines and most of the sinks are on island benches...is this a better look and is it practical?? What do you guys think??? Stove and oven will be opposite the bench top against the wall. - Re: Sink facing window and not in island bench. 2Jan 11, 2013 4:54 am An easy way to consider usability is to think equal length in a triangle between fridge, stovetop and sink. It's not always possible of course, and if I have my way with regards to building, there is not a way for me to follow my own advice (I will then only have an island bench, with a fridge in a drawer), but I can live with at concession, all other things considered. I personally think it's much better to have the sink under the window and the cooktop on the island, for a couple of reasons: You'll have a view to the outside when doing dishes, you get to open the window next to the source of steam/moisture, and you won't have problems with having a (gas) stovetop in front of a window, as that is a no-no. On the other hand, having a the cooktop against a wall means you will not only have more choice when it comes to range hoods, but that when placed against a wall, you can either fit a specific hood higher than you would be able to over an island bench, or you could make do with a slightly less powerful model for the same effect. Edit: clarification. Re: Sink facing window and not in island bench. 3Jan 11, 2013 6:33 pm If your kitchen is small I wouldn't worry about having a sink in the island. If your kitchen is large and your kitchen work triangle cumulative distance exceeds 7 metres, consider having a small preparation sink in the island (especially if there are two cooks in the kitchen). Re: Sink facing window and not in island bench. 4Jan 11, 2013 7:38 pm Friends of ours have decided on two sinks in their kitchen, they have the main one under the window but have a single round sink to one end of the island. From spending many hours sat at the island and watch them cook they tend to use the small sink for food prep (washing vege before they cut them, which is done on the island) while the main sink is used for washing dishes. They do almost all of their food prep on the island so having the round sink to one end is very useful. I think I might consider that. Thanks guys for the feed back!! The warning is on the sticker on the door too.
