Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Apr 11, 2008 1:00 pm For those that have a combined bowl/s and drainer for their kitchen sinks, what side is the drainer on and what was your reasoning for putting on that side?
I had ours put on the left, the reasoning for me was the dishwasher would be on the left, since both the wife and I are right handed, it was easier IMO to open the dishwasher with the left hand, pull out the trays with the left and load the dishes with the right hand. Feeble excuse I know, I was just wondering how others came to the decision. Apologies if this has been discussed before. Re: What side is your drainer on? 2Apr 11, 2008 2:01 pm kiwi056 I had ours put on the left, the reasoning for me was the dishwasher would be on the left, ... Out of hundreds of kitchens I've designed 99% of the time the drainer is on the same side as the diswasher or dishwasher space as you have done. For the times that the kitchen doesn't have a dishwasher,r has a raised dishwasher not under the benchtop, or elsewhere in the kitchen, it just comes down to personal preference or design constraints Re: What side is your drainer on? 3Apr 11, 2008 2:09 pm BOTH!
My drainer is on both sides, have opted to have traditonal double sided drainer, my reasoning being that there should be one side for clean dishes, one side for dirty dishes. Not having a dishwasher, by choice. (And that is a subject that has been done before ) Re: What side is your drainer on? 4Apr 11, 2008 2:22 pm Helyn BOTH! Thanks Shady, it makes good sense. Re: What side is your drainer on? 6Apr 11, 2008 3:54 pm If you have a look at most sinks, the drainer is on the right.
I like it on the right too, since being an ordered sort of person, I like my processes to go from left to right. Left basin for wshing, righ basin for rinsing and drainer to the right. Like Ms Vanderlay, it has to be on the right! Demolition August 2009, Construction Started September 2009, Completed December 2010 Re: What side is your drainer on? 8Apr 11, 2008 8:50 pm We dont even have a drainer. Issue Solved. Just put them on the kitchen bench anywhere you like. Great for both left & or right handed Re: What side is your drainer on? 9Apr 11, 2008 9:16 pm Casa2 If you have a look at most sinks, the drainer is on the right. Our kitchen guy said that if we're right handed (which we are) then it's better to put the drainer on the left side, since you generally scrub with your dominant hand and hold with the other hand, so it's easier to put the clean dish that you have in your left hand onto a left-side drainer. Which made sense, yet I realise now that, although we had the drainer on the left side in our old kitchen here, we did have the drainer on the right side at our previous house, and both my and my wife's folks also have it on the right... I guess the flaw in what he said is that you still have to reach across yourself to pick up the dirty dish which is stacked on the right side of the sink if the drainer is on the left... Re: What side is your drainer on? 10Apr 11, 2008 9:46 pm Some great responses here, thanks so much. I’m always interested in why some do things one way and others do it differently. Maybe next we can move onto which side the toilet roll holder is installed (Just Kidding). Re: What side is your drainer on? 11Apr 12, 2008 12:02 am Although DH and I are both right handed we always do the dishes from left to right.
Have a double sided drainer in current house so could do either way. Just habit, I guess, don't really think about the ergonomics of things like this. I think it only comes into play when you’re building or renovating. I’ve looked in hundreds of houses including display homes and it’s something I don’t take much notice of. When we were building that’s when I had to consider it. Re: What side is your drainer on? 14Apr 12, 2008 7:50 am Shady kiwi056 ..... Maybe next we can move onto which side the toilet roll holder is installed (Just Kidding). Sorry Shady, if I was going to ask it would be put into the bathroom thread, however I do wonder how many consider things like this, including which way doors swing at planning stage. Re: What side is your drainer on? 15Apr 12, 2008 8:40 am Currently we have a drainer on both sides and in the new place if I can find a sink I like with double drainers we will have that as well - but so far I've not found one that I really like .....
So probably we will have the drainer on the right (over the dishwasher) cause there are some things that we won't both putting in the dishwasher and are happy to let dry on the drainer rack during the day ...... Fiona Re: What side is your drainer on? 16Apr 12, 2008 9:22 am Talinsmum Currently we have a drainer on both sides and in the new place if I can find a sink I like with double drainers we will have that as well - but so far I've not found one that I really like ..... Fiona Thats what we also wanted originally but couldn't find one that we liked, so opted for the single sided. Does the side of the drainer matter when it comes to where the sink is situated in relation to the rest of the bench. I.e. is it better to have it closer to say the cooktop so hot pots can be put on it, or is it better to have it closer to say a breakfast bar giving more space for food preparation. Obviously some sinks are located in the Breakfast Bar so the side of the drainer is somewhat irrelevant. Whats the general trend for Knife and Fork drawers, are these located on the drainer side/ dishwasher side of the bench, or basically irrelevant? Our drawers are located on the same side as the Drainer/dishwasher which is also our breakfast bar. http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/jj28/kiwi056/House/Home/Kitchen-3.jpg One of the advantages of going custom build, the builder and plumber installed all the appliances, including washing machine prior to us moving in. Plus we had all the curtains installed prior as well. The above photo was just before we took ownership of the house. Re: What side is your drainer on? 17Apr 12, 2008 10:47 am Our drainer is on the right. I've always had it on the right (in 4 houses) and I don't think I'd like it on the left. My in laws have it on the left, and I don't like it. It really does depend on where the dishwasher is.
I don't really see the need for a double drainer, as dirty dishes are generally not wet on the outside - therefore no need to drain into sink. I'd prefer the clear, flat bench space. And you can't really swap sides with them (as in decide you want to go to the right instead of the left), because the wash bowl will be on one side, then the rinse, then the drainer for clean dishes - so it has an order. Go with whatever you prefer. Ray. Second Time 'Round Re: What side is your drainer on? 18Apr 12, 2008 11:03 am LOL, you know what, i haven't checked....Just looked at our drawings and it's on the right....
For me/us i don't think it really matters. In the new house it will be on the dishwasher side of the bench. In the last house it was on the LHS over the dishwasher, in the house before that i put in a double return sink.... I don't really use the return, i like to keep it as clean as possible, just about everything is put into the dishwasher or washed and dried straight away anyway. Ray, both our current house and our new house have a double sided drainer but only one bowl so could swap sides. I would of liked one and a half bowl sink with double drainer but this wouldn't fit into width available under the window. I could of moved the sink to the breakfast bar, but chose not to, although I know this is now the most common kitchen configuration. Kiwi, your kitchen layout is identical to ours in terms of fridge, pantry, cooktop, breakfast bar, sink postions etc. Your kitchen looks really nice. interesting you have used the rounded bench top edges, we are doing this too, although I notice the square edges seem much more common now. May I ask the dimensions of your kitchen? Judging by the cupboard lenghts, it looks similar to ours, which will be 4m x 2.7m. Re: What side is your drainer on? 20Apr 12, 2008 3:18 pm Helyn,
You opted for a single bowl sink with two drainers rather than two bowls and a single drainer. Interesting tradeoff. Was it because you couldn't decide which side to put the drainer on Cheers, Casa Demolition August 2009, Construction Started September 2009, Completed December 2010 Hi HomeOne, I'm in the midst of landscaping a cat run down the side of my house, and the recent rains have me wondering if I need to install some sort of drainage.
