Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Dec 07, 2012 10:40 pm Hi guys. As mentioned in my other thread I have other questions about our kitchen. Here is the drawings as they are right now: http://i1055.photobucket.com/albums/s505/SmithiesWife/KitchenLayoutdrawings.jpg I am really happy with most things but will be changing the following: - Shortening the island signifcantly to make it about 3m long as it is too long now and will have a join in whatever stone we go for. - moving the island to line up with the stove area and to give clear access to the scullery. - moving the sink so that it is in the island but at one end - widening the island and adding cupboards on the other side of the sink cupboards to ensure no one is sitting staring into my sink and to give a 300-ish mm overhang instead of a 250mm. - widening the drawers and reducing from 4 equal sized to 1 small and two big drawers? - pot drawers next to UBO and a small cupboard either side? Here's my version with the proposed changes: http://i1055.photobucket.com/albums/s505/SmithiesWife/Kitchenlayoutchanges.jpg http://i1055.photobucket.com/albums/s505/SmithiesWife/Kitchenlayoutchanges2.jpg I am wondering whether to: - reduce the size of the bench in the scullery to just the width of the cupboard (where sink is) and moving it and the wall between it and the pantry over to the left closer to the fridge to increase the length of the pantry shelves along that wall or - putting a broom cupboard next to the fridge where the d/w recess was. I also am unsure what a bin recess or cupboard entails and where to put it - the island would be the obvious place I guess but how do I show this on the plan? Should the door to the scullery be higher to line up with the top of the overhead cupboards? I have already asked about adding another pantry shelf in the other thread. I am still not sure I am going to keep the sink in the scullery but need to make a decision ASAP. I also want waterfall ends I think so do we need that shown on the plan? How? Any other advice/suggestions? Re: Kitchen layout 3Dec 09, 2012 1:49 pm Fridge inside the pantry? I would find that quite annoying. I'd keep door heights the same standard height throughout the house. You don't want to have one a different height to the others. Broom cupboard would be handy but seems you're limited on space with this layout. Re: Kitchen layout 4Dec 09, 2012 3:49 pm Hi d@n. Thanks for taking the time to respond. d@n Fridge inside the pantry? I would find that quite annoying. Fair enough. I disagree though. I like that the fridge is not on display and also think it is easily accessible being the first thing you get to in the scullery door. d@n I'd keep door heights the same standard height throughout the house. You don't want to have one a different height to the others. That is a good point. Looking from the meals area you will be able to see the scullery door and to the left the entrance to the corridor that leads to the kids rooms so it could look a bit weird. d@n Broom cupboard would be handy but seems you're limited on space with this layout. I have done a mock up. I don't think we are limited on space - it's just a matter of rejigging I think. If we make the cupboard which is replacing the d/w recess into a smaller 450w then move the wall between the cupboards and the pantry shelves over to the left to make up the difference we gain a bit there and then take a bit off the shelves on the other side for the broom cupboard. We can also add a couple of shelves above the cupboard space to give more storage space. http://i1055.photobucket.com/albums/s505/SmithiesWife/Kitchenlayoutchanges6.jpg http://i1055.photobucket.com/albums/s505/SmithiesWife/Kitchenlayoutchanges7.jpg I am not sure though if they can have the shelves connecting to a piece of laminated melamine (which would be the broom cupboard wall as it is shown above) or whether they would have to put in a brick wall there. I think they do it in linen cupboards though so it must be doable. Re: Kitchen layout 5Dec 09, 2012 4:57 pm The broom party should be possible as we are having something similar in our linen cupboard. Have you thought about putting the two small cupboards next the the oven, rather then the draws? Not sure what you thinking of putting in there but could be handy for baking trays etc. Also have you considered pushing you island to 1m wide? If it is going to be so long it may end up looking quite narrow... Every time I see you kitchen I get incredibly jealous! You are going to have an amazing house. Re: Kitchen layout 6Dec 09, 2012 5:16 pm thanks fmac. Glad to hear someone else is having a broom cupboard like that. The island is definitely not going to be as long as on the original plan and yes I do want it wider. It will be about 1m wide cos I want a cupboard on the other side of the sink cupboards and a decent overhang for the breakfast bar bit. I hadn't thought about that for the cupboards either. I will have to do another mock up to make up my mind. Re: Kitchen layout 7Dec 10, 2012 11:20 pm on the cooker side, I would want to have 3 x 900mm drawer cabinets (3 drawers, 1 small, 2 larger ones). At both ends each a 200 mm wide cabinet, one for oven trays (full pullout door), the other one for oil bottles, etc (full door pullout), and a 20mm filler panel. On the island, the sink is in the correct position, if you are used to turn left to reach the cooker. Washing the veggies, left of the sink then cutting and chopping, turning left to cook them. I don't know, how much space you want on the right of the sink. Next to the sink cabinet, could be the dishwasher, next to it a 300-400mm pullout bin system directly under the bench (cabinet would have 2 drawers). I prefer to have wide drawers wherever possible, unless the cabinets are only 300-350mm deep. I would not want to have the fridge at the back, however, in your situation it's possibly the only option. If you could put up a plan of the space around the kitchen, we could get a bit idea of the space. Re: Kitchen layout 8Dec 10, 2012 11:52 pm I thought of something that I've seen in a house for where you want the cupboards... We know someone who has put a bar type fridge, the ones with the glass front under the island facing into the living area. A little excessive for me but it is pretty cool Re: Kitchen layout 9Dec 11, 2012 9:03 am Just a comment on the island bench, how many bar stools will you want?if you are having the cupboards on the back near the sink, then you will restrict the number of bar stools you can put comfortably across the other 2m. Re: Kitchen layout 10Dec 11, 2012 10:02 am Thanks again for the replies. Evelin - I like the suggestions for the oven side layout and the bin drawer in the island. I wasn't sure how wide those things are. This is definitely not a final layout as we are discussing it today with the builder so it is really great to get some ideas. I don't want to move the fridge - I placed it there deliberately to hide it away but still be easily accessible. fmac - the only thing I don't like about bar fridges is the amount of energy they use. We hope to have a big fridge/freezer at some stage which I think will use more than enough power. I like the thought of the cupboard because you can discreetly put things in there you may need during dinner parties or to hide table clutter. Gogo - don't know how many - how ever many will fit? Don't really mind so long as no one is staring into the sink! I absolutely detest that. Then again i may not get a choice depending on cost . My sister's island is 2.8m wide and they fit four rather bulky stools with quite a wide space between each so surely we should be fine to fit a few in 2m. Re: Kitchen layout 11Dec 11, 2012 10:17 am I cant comment on the layout itself the only thing is you may need to start checking what fridge you would want to buy from now because you need to check if it will fit in the door for to be maneuvered into the scullery considering the tight angle and door width. The other thing if you plan on doing any prep work in the scullery then i wouldnt reduce the benchtop any more and would leave it as it is.. The fridge/freezers we have looked at recently are about 900 to a metre or so wide. We don't want the big side by side ones - want the fridge on top and freezer under style. We won't be getting a new fridge till after we have kids and they have grown a bit. Ours is only 3 years old as it is so cant really justify it. The bench top is mainly going to be for the microwave to sit on and the kettle and stuff. I am still not 100% sure if the sink in the scullery will stay or go or if the broom cupboard will go in there or the WIL. if the sink stays i won't reduce the bench size and won't put the broom cupboard in the scullery. It is going to be a last minute decision I think. It would be handy for filling the kettle having a sink in there. Re: Kitchen layout 13Dec 11, 2012 3:42 pm One thing to remeber that I just thought of is will you be able to open the fridge if it is right next to a wall? most with handles will be difficult to open onto a wall. I wanted to swap out pantry and fridge location around but realised that we then wouldn't be able to open the fridge door right up as it would bang into the wall (would have saved some money if we could have as I wouldn't have needed the laminate wall between the fridge and bench) Re: Kitchen layout 14Dec 11, 2012 3:52 pm fmac One thing to remeber that I just thought of is will you be able to open the fridge if it is right next to a wall? most with handles will be difficult to open onto a wall. Our current fridge opens to the right so wouldn't open in to the wall. The width of the space is 1200 and any future fridge we have will only be 1m wide max so either way there will be room. Re: Kitchen layout 15Dec 11, 2012 4:08 pm if the gap is 1200 you'll have more then enough space! We went looking at fridges and the guy said if your space is 1000 you will fit almost every possible fridge in the space (except the seperate fridge/freezer). You could have a wine rack made for the space closest to the wall, makes use of the space. You never have a fridge against wall as you’ve drawn. The doors can’t open past 90 degrees and it’s difficult and maybe impossible to remove drawers 2 15600 Hi, We're building a double-storey in Perth and I'm undecided with the kitchen sink situation.
