Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Dec 01, 2012 1:13 pm Hi everyone, we are currently talking to a local cabinet maker in regards to our kitchen, and we really dont know what to do with the island bench. Its a big one at 1200mm wide by about 2500mm long. We are having a 300mm overhang for a breakfast bar down one side. We can't decide weather to have waterfalls put on each end or just a matching pattern end panel. I havent seen a lot of islands this size, and the one we had seen in a display home didn't have waterfalls.
What are the pros and cons to having them? Are they purely cosmetic or do they provide extra strength especially when having a breakfast bar? The benchtops will be 40mm stone tops. We were planning on putting a power point in one end, and if we did run the waterfalls, this is one downside, as I think it might look too silly. Opinions and pictures welcome. Re: Waterfalls on island or not? 2Dec 01, 2012 1:17 pm Your title had me curious ... Certainly agree on dbl PPs. Re: Waterfalls on island bench or not? 4Dec 02, 2012 8:12 am Think it just a personal preference. We couldn't justify the extra $1,000 ourselves.
Re: Waterfalls on island bench or not? 6Dec 02, 2012 11:18 am We are having our island which measures 3000mm x 1200mm and having 40mm waterfall ends. We also have another waterfall end on the other run of cupboards that is on the back wall. Our stone is going to have the overhang for the breakfast bar the same as yours and 60mm thick. I am having the same thoughts as you as I think a PowerPoint on the island would be incredibly useful but I am thinking of having on the end that you can't see as you enter the kitchen. Re: Waterfalls on island bench or not? 9Dec 02, 2012 9:50 pm You can put power points under the benchtop on the back of cabinets under the breakfast bar (if that makes sense). Thats where we plan to put ours.. think i got idea from another kitchen on here somewhere Waterfalls on island bench or not? 10Dec 02, 2012 10:05 pm LeanneR You can put power points under the benchtop on the back of cabinets under the breakfast bar (if that makes sense). It gives the island unit a solid grounded look. If there is no large overhang to sit at standard end panels can look ok, but when you have a 300-400mm overhang the waterfalls look so much better! Do you think 60/80mm is worth the extra expense over 40mm? When I say 60/80mm The sink side of the bench will be 60mm and the barstool side is 80mm. I will have 920mm high benchtops to match the fixed window height. If it is doubled up with a butt join then there would be a fair difference in price but if it was mitred like the 60/80 will be done then there wouldnt be much difference in price. The extra thickness can look awesome in a large kitchen. Its really a personal choice though. I thought about having the power point under the breakfast bar but we are having cabinets on that side as well. Looks like if we want it it will need to be on the waterfall. One side will be a waterfall, the other is against a wall. I'm not sure of the price difference, because a relative is building the kitchen for me and will just bill me for the stone mason at cost price. He says the price will depend on if the stone mason has a half cut piece leftover from another job or has to order a full slab. He says it's up to me, but I'm not sure if it's worth the extra cost for 60/80 as it's only a townhouse in an average suburb. Like hsvboy, I also have to decide if I want a GPO on the waterfall end. I wonder if I can put it on the inside edge of the 80mm waterfall (where the bar stools are), I'm not a huge fan of having it in the outside waterfall as it breaks up the clean lines, even though I'm using slimline GPOs. Re: Waterfalls on island bench or not? 16Dec 04, 2012 6:22 am I would just ues 40mm and put the power point on the bar back where the stools go. I thought about putting the power point on the underside where the bar stools will go. I decided not to for 2 reasons. firstly if you are having people over and the bar stools are full - it will be a pain to ask people to move so you can use it. Secondly my overhang is 400mm. for the appliances cord to come back under the bench (400mm) plus back over the bench say at least another 400 (unless you are going to stand on the other side of the bench) you are going to use up at least 800mm of your cord making it a bit more difficult. My power point is going on the waterfall end of one side. Between my pantry and the island bench. Noone will be able to see it except whoever is coming out of the pantry. The other option is one of those pop up points that come out of the top of the bench. I am currently getting one of those priced up for my main bench as the back bench doesnt have any splash back (to put a point on) - its all windows Re: Waterfalls on island bench or not? 18Dec 04, 2012 7:43 pm I love waterfall ends and agree that powerpoints in the ends can detract from the feature. I have seen on here, a fake draw front that folds down with a powerpoint behind it. We are putting a bin draw in and at the top of the draw we are putting a fixed panel with a powerpoint in it so it is hidden, but can use it if we need it. (if that makes sense) Re: Waterfalls on island bench or not? 19Dec 05, 2012 9:35 am Hi! I love waterfall ends too and have put them on our island! We didn't want a PowerPoint on the ends so we've put in pop up powerpoints on the top. Love them!
