Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Oct 17, 2012 10:08 am Hi all I'm currently doing a full kitchen reno and in the process of finding a company that can do it for me. There's one problem and that's regarding my kitchen space - it's a bit awkward. Please look at my kitchen floorplan and photos and give me some opinions. Floorplan: http://imgur.com/a0hjN Existing plan: http://imgur.com/tBI1V Kitchen photos: http://imgur.com/a/NTgXf#0 Basically my problem is the bulkhead that separates the dining and kitchen area. House is double brick and I'm not willing to do any alternations to the floorplan as it would be a huge job removing the bulkhead or opening up the partial wall between the kitchen / dining. I'm not a huge fan of my existing plan but it seems to be the best I can come up with on my own. The stove and sink positions can't change as that's where the existing plumbing (gas and water) is. My main gripe is what to do about the bulkhead. If I had more space, I would have an attached island there instead of high cabinets that almost touch the bulkhead - not sure whether to have the high cabinets touch (and integrate with) the bulkhead or not. Re: Need ideas on my kitchen design - awkward space 2Oct 17, 2012 10:47 am Hi I guess with any project you need to ask yourself "how far are you prepared to go". When I renovated our last house (double brick) I removed a whole wall to make a combined kitchen/family area. I'm a carpenter (kitchen and bathrooms are what I do) so could do it all myself, but it certainly changed the house and added massively to the layout and ultimately it's resale value. Taking out the wall between the kitchen and dining area isn't that big a deal. Yes it will add to the cost but if this is a long term house then sometimes a few extra $$$ spent now will give you years of satisfaction. I'd actually ask if the other door into the kitchen (one next to fridge) is required? If that was closed up it would give you some more options as you could start to change a number of things and could probably get a breakfast bar in without taking out the dividing wall. Don't be afraid of moving your oven and cook top, running a new gas line isn't to much of a problem. Otherwise your planned layout isn't to bad. I think you'd find it works fairly well. Where are you located? Double brick usually means your in Perth. Thanks chippy I appreciate the suggestion but at this stage I'm pretty deadset on not doing major structural changes because of limited budget and time (and capacity to deal with new headaches haha) So with the existing plan, is there anything else I can do? Re: Need ideas on my kitchen design - awkward space 4Oct 17, 2012 11:13 am I think the existing plan works fine given your design brief. I can't see how it could be done any different, aside from using some drawers in your base units. Drawers tend to allow better usage of space than cupboards. All the best. Accessible Carpentry & Cabinets accessiblecarpentry@gmail.com accessiblecarpentry.com.au https://www.facebook.com/pages/Accessible-Carpentry-Cabinets/583314911709039 dimensions on your original plan are inconsistent and with accurate dimensions (including site plan, upstairs and down) i could make a proper scale drawing with furniture… 3 7485 You can really use anything you want the main consideration would be how it looks once painted/finished - or the look you want. Cabinetmakers use MDF because its cheap… 2 9900 Thank you so much for the effort. We will use it to talk with builder. We also had idea of building duplex instead and seeking suggest ions. viewtopic.php?f=31&t=106744 11 13769 |
