Pigeon pair fridge/freezers?

We are looking at getting a pigeon pair ie separate fridge and freezer. So far I've found Electrolux (a bit expensive for DH), Westinghouse, Fisher and Paykel and Miele (way too small for our requirements).

I read some where about the volume of fridge space required per person in a household and according to this formula we would require about 400lt of fridge space.

Has anyone got a pigeon pair?

What are peoples experiences with the above brands ie I don't like the FP freezer as it has drawers that you can't see into if you are of "petite stature"

Does anyone else make pigeon pairs?

The fridge and freezer don't actually have to be the same brand as we will have our fridge in the kitchen and the freezer hidden in the pantry.

Seriously, what size fridge do you have now, how much bigger do you think you would NEED.
and buy that.
I've lived in the tropics and the UK.
Fridge sizes vary HEAPS - due to the need to refridgerate something due to the ambient air temp.

At the moment we only have 288lt fridge and 96lt freezer with 6 people (we have what can be quaintly called a galley kitchen)

Way too small!! and the kids are only going to keep growing, despite my best efforts, and eating more and more and more.... :shock:

So definitely need more space in both compartments.

I'll have to check it out later because "computer says No" at the moment. I've had trouble with the Samsung site before.

I have seen a large side by side with 4 doors (the quatro) that they make which is not quite what we want. You can either have 3 fridge compartments which is great but then you don't get the volume in the freezer. Or vice versa - 3 freezer compartments...small fridge

We purchased out pigeon pair (Westinghouse) about 10 years ago and have been very happy with it.

However we now have two kids and the fridge part is getting a bit small (340 litre) mainly because whilst there is a reasonable volume they tend to be narrower than "normal" fridges and we find ourselves trying to jam things in. Also the door space in "normal" fridges appears to be heaps more.

We will be moving soon and a new purchase will be standard fridge/freezer, and the pigeon pair freezer will be in the garage for extra meals n' stuff.

From memory I think you could get "normal" fridges with higher star ratings than even the most efficient pigeon pair...if that is a selling point.

Thanks. I think the Westinghouse i've been looking at is a bit larger 430lt fridge and 360lt freezer. Fridge is rated 5 stars and freezer 3.5 - is this typical for a freezer?

What I like about pigeon pairs is the volume, and they seem to be wider than a side by side. The standard fridges just don't have the volume we need.

What I don't like about the Westinghouse is that it's crisper seems to be quite small and we eat a lot of fruit and vegies.

But I guess like every thing in this game it's about compromise...we just have to work out what's most important to us

Have a look at http://www.energyrating.gov.au/appsearc ... g_srch.asp all the brands are listed with their energy ratings (3 looks typical for the freezer) but it gives you an idea of what's available in what brand.

Tupperware does a good job if you need extra space for fruit and veg. The one with the vent holes.

Thanks. We've discussed that too. At this stage that is what we are planning to do, going with the Westinghouse fridge and buying tupperware.

But then I saw a larger Miele last night on their site - 413lt, 6 stars. I'll have to check out the price though as I don't know if i can't justify the extra expense. It doesn't look very wide - 60cm - and is 184 cm tall. I don't think I'll be able to reach anything on the topself! and dh is not tall either

I'll have to have a closer look at one - but think the Westinghouse is still looking good.

The other thing to consider if your looking at a miele is the fingerprints on the stainless steel.

A friend has one and it shows up EVERY mark.

There are different types of finishes for stainless steel, you can get ones that dont show up marks, make sure you put your hands all over it before you buy.

Or I have seen Miele side by side done as an integrated system..very stylish.

Oh yes...finger prints...hadn't thought of that. Do you think the shop assistants would mind if I get the kids to run their dirty fingers all over their fridges? I've already been through Clive Peeters with a tape measure measuring crisper drawers

I've seen the intergrated fridge in a house we visited, but I think it is only the smaller fridge that is intergrated - only 258lt

It's also mark resistant and sleek squareli lines and hidden hinges.
Very energy efficient too!

We have a small fridge at the moment and really need a big one.

The only other pigeon fridge I know is Electrolux and Miele.

We currently have a F&P 519L fridge/freezer. When we move into our new home I plan on purchasing a BIG freezer - as we buy sides of beef, lamb etc and fruits/veg in bulk. At the moment we split an order up with family - but we're moving quite a distance away and will need to store it all ourselves.

I don't want a huge freezer in the kitchen but plan on putting it in our laundry. Could this be another option?

Yes I've seen those, but am having trouble convincing DH that they are worth the extra money. He usually comes around to my way of thinking, :wink:

No it doesn't have to be a pigeon pair, but I haven't seen much else with a 400lt fridge capacity.
I've been considering the same sort of thing as you, but again have to try and convince DH :!:

We ended up buying two Fisher & Paykel fridges - one of which we are getting the handle reversed so when they are assembled side by side they will look like a pair. We did this so then we will have a combined capacity of 720l fridge and 318l freezer - much more then our existing double door fridge/freezer combo.
